No help here Zozee, but let us know if you figure it out! I was trying to use that same stitch on some flower stems I was quilting, and gave up. I could not get it to balance out either. Mine looked just like yours. I went with wavy stitch. You have more patience than I do!!

Dumb question, but...are you remembering to use a stabilizer on the underside of the fabric?

If the bottom looks better, I'd flip it to sew. Bottom on top????

do you have a stitch balance adjustment? Some machines have this for their decorative stitches - check you manual. Also make sure you bobbin case is very clean and there are no threads stuck anywhere. Problems on the top usually indicate a bobbin issue, but of course not always. Good luck.

Release the tension headache first then I would think your tension needs adjusted. I have been reading a lot about tension adjustment on different machines and told to keep in mind the tension number doesn't really mean a whole lot because fabric and thread play a major part in what the actual tension needs to be.

Hallelujah! I fixed the tension. I tried 4 things and not sure which one did the trick.

1) used micro vacuum attachments to suction out teeny dust particles I couldn't get with the lint brush, then added a drop of oil
2) changed thread, top and bobbin, from one color to a completely different color, but same brand (Connecting Threads quilting cotton) . For some reason, even though they are the same, the grey felt thicker. I dunno. Might be my imagination.
3) re-inserted the needle (which I changed two days ago). It was not backward, but I did it anyway, and tightened everything up.
4) tried different tension settings, but that didn't change things. The tension is set back to which is where it started.

Here is my test swatch. Grey thread is bad stitches, blue is good.

My hunch is that the micro-vacuuming and adding a drop of oil was the a-ha!
