Friday at approximately 1:14 pm Pacific Standard Time Linda decided she must cover the gray in her hair. To set the facts straight I started dying my hair at age 39 and not one day sooner.

One day I looked in the mirror and saw that my natural blonde hair was no longer sultry. Instead of a Dietrich look I was assuming a a dead on impression of Bette Davis in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane".

Hoping to resolve the problem I decided then and there to go down the "colour red" road hoping for a younger look. Since the age of 13, when I was trying to achieve the 60’s blonde Mod look, I have always dyed my hair with Clairol and nothing else.

What happens when you go to the drugstore and they do not have the required Clairol Colorsilk Red Auburn? When does an issue like this it go into emergency mode? I walked up and down the aisle evaluating each one until one of the managers came up and asked me if I needed any help. I looked at him and smiled, but inside I was screaming,

"Where is my Red Auburn Clairol Colorsilk and what have you done with them?

After much thought and gasping at prices, I subbed my brand with L'Oreal FERIA. I had used it once before in desperation and it was decent and the price was right.

"All is well," I thought.

With the Colorsilk brand you simply add one bottle into the other, shake, apply and wait 30 minutes. Feria was another matter. I stood there with my gaping mouth looking at the instructions, which most certainly required a college degree.

Step 1 - Put on gloves. Mind you they were professional looking gloves, and better than the ones stuck to the instructions with the Colorsilk. I started to read the detailed words and it said,

“Get Ready!”

Okay I was ready and slapped on the luxurious rubber gloves. Here we go!

Step 2 - Twist off tip of cap from shimmering colour development creme (large labeled bottle, number 2), then remove cap. At that point I could not get the cap off and was trying to bite it off. Not a good thought if it flies off I thought to myself.

Step 3- Carefully open the Feria colour booster tube and add contents. Okay this is a digipack package and I could not get that to open either so I attempt to ply it open with my mouth. Imagine a squirting noise if you will, and the hair colour is now over the instructions and in my mouth.

Step 4- Recap bottle and shake. Okay, I thought, I can do that and onward we go. I trudged upstairs and began the hair dye ordeal. The dye seemed very watery and it was going everywhere like a tsunami. My mind screamed,

“Attention Kmart Shoppers- Looks like a slasher film in bathroom 1!”

The towel now looks like I have been seriously injured and 911 should be called. The Feria Red is everywhere and I no longer wonder why the instructions say to use a dark towel. They should add in the instructions that Feria red dye is serious stuff and no amateur should ever handle it.

I gaze in the mirror and the the colour of my hair looks like a bright pumpkin growing in the Arizona desert. The sink, my forehead, the tub and the floor are covered with large spats of this bright red dye. I use rubbing alcohol to clean up the small spats and use Formula 409 to clean the big stuff. I imagine myself doing a future commercial for the product.

My gloves are now off and disposed off of when I realize I have three more steps. Three more steps? I need to proceed to apply the special shampoo as well as a conditioner. I realized then and there that the Feria was really giving me my ten dollars worth.

I glanced in the mirror once again and saw that my hair colour was now changing to a Sharpie Pen Orange. Now looking exactly like Carrot Top I figured I had to endure this colour for at least another two weeks before it started to fade.

So let this be a lesson to all of you. Always get the hair colour you need because experimentation should never be tried after you turn age 50! But, then again I no longer look like Baby Jane.

LOL!!!! A friend recently reminded me of a time in the 60's when we had a similar incident (though we were in high school at the time). We went out right away and bought new dye and no harm seemed to come of it (in spite of the warnings on the package). Good luck!!!!

Stories like yours is why I have paid the pro's. I spent a few years in "that" isle just starring at the choices and the whole time hearing every voice of experience telling me .. "ash will go green" ...."go lighter than whats on the box".. don't beleive the box color" .... "buy a temporay" .. it was paralyzing!!! Each time retreating in complete fear of the dreaded "Carrot Top" or "Green Pond Haze" or even the "Hint of Lilac" ....
I will openly admit those tidy boxes with glamorous ladies onthe front SCARE THE HECK OUT OF ME!!! Some people fear clowns .. others spiders .. mine is the hair color box ladies. !! You know their eyes follow you right!!!

Oh, but your eyes look so pretty with that color. I've been there done that. I'd take several showers a day hoping the color would go away.
