Thread: Unusual Thankgsgiving Traditions

    So what do you do that is off the spectrum of being considered "normal" for thanksgiving. The turkey is normal, the stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and cranberries are all considered normal Thanksgiving fare. So what's not normal? One year we ate lobsters for dinner. I'd consider that somewhat not normal. So how 'bout you?

    My favorite hoilday is Thanksgiving, I even have hand painted dining room chairs and each chair is a different thanksgiving scene. I am so traditional that I have not once not had a normal thanksgiving. It will be fun to see what un traditional fare others have had.

    The first pilgrims ate seafood. So last year we had lobster too! What a blast to be different. This year we are roasting our turkey in a pit with hot rocks, etc. It's SOOOOOoooooooo yummy. But our tradition is Rosy slush. A punch made of cranberries, pineapple juice,etc, frozen into cubes, then served with sprite. Yummm. It's awful to say, and I'm probably the only one to admit it, but I really don't like Thanksgiving. I love the idea of being thankful, but the whole scene has never been my fav.

    My mom tried having baked chicken one year when I was about 10.... I took MY plate to my neighbor's home and came back with some turkey and turkey gravy LMBO
    When it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas, I want MY turkey....so to keep from being embarrassed again, and being teased by the neighbor LOL.... I got turkey every year...even to this day if I go home for Thanksgiving :wink: good thing too...as I don't know any of her neighbors now :shock:

    One year when we were kids, Mom made a hogmaw. She never lived that one down. We love that, but come on, Mom, it's Thanksgiving! We didn't realize till years later, it is what we had. My parents had bought our farm the previous year, the potatoe crop was good, Dad had just butchered a couple hogs, and there were 5 of us kids plus the grands to feed.

    What is "hogmaw"? I'm assuming it has to do with a pig...not sure if I want to know now!! LOL

    SaraSewing, your Rosy Slush sounds like something I'd like to try!

    I don't know that my stuffing is so off-the-wall, but being Jewish, my family used challah (Jewish bread) as the base for the stuffing. I've tried others over the years, from instant mixes to cornbread stuffing recipes, and they're good, but no Thanksgiving stuffing tastes completely right to me unless it's made with challah.

    I've been through some tough times in my life, so when things got better, Thanksgiving became a very meaningful holiday for me. I would reflect on the things I was thankful for.

    This year, after being unemployed for 18 months and with both my unemployment and my health insurance ending this month, I was going to skip it. But I just got contacted for a job interview, so I may have a limited holiday and call it a "Thanksgiving of Hope" - and if I get the job, I'll do a real Thanksgiving when I finally see a paycheck (which, the way they're moving, won't be until late next spring, and will be less than half what I was making - about the same amount as my unemployment check is now, actually - but will at least keep me going.)

    adriansmom, hogmaw is a clean pig's stomach, stuffed with loose sausage(sausage out of it's casing), peeled and diced potatoes, and carrots, maybe some peas for color and a liitle onion for flavor. Different cooks, different recipes! You roast it in the oven till the 'skin' is brown and everything is done! It's been awhile since I made one. I do NOT eat that skin! For some people, that's the best part! Ugh! I sometimes make "blind hogmaw", just the sausage and potatoes part !

    Lisanne I hope your situation improves. I also remember the challah stuffing. And, back in the day, inside the turkey! Sometimes my Grandma used hard rolls she let go "crisp". Mmmm, some good memories.

    For us Thanksgiving is turkey, stuffing, corn casserole, mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, lots gravy, whole and jellied cranberry sauce, and apple cider. Sometimes a fruit cup, salad, additional veggies or buttnut squash soup might be added. It's really the only time I make a whole turkey. I'm from an Italian family and some families also add a macaroni dish but my Grandfather insisted that Thanksgiving be just Turkey and all the fixings. He used to buy the biggest turkey he could find, he even bought a restaurant sized pan for it.

    This year we'll be having Thanksgiving diiner at my DIL's sister's in Delaware so I'll see what is tradtional for her family. Hostess is the one who issued the Great Turnip Challenge I posted here about last week. My recipe will be honey glazed carrots and turnips. I'm curious to find out what other turnip dishes will be brought to this dinner. May in Jersey

    We don't do turkey. We usually do Butterflied Bayou Shrimp. Yummy. :D :D :D :D

    DH is chinese and i consider my lifestyle to be more chinese than american and we do a chinese menu.

    well i cook chinese all day every day but holidays are a feast menu.

    i make peking duck, crispy chicken, butterfly shrimp with bacon, steamed sea bass with ginger and scallions, noodles with asian veggies, jasmine rice, and assorted chinese veggies.

    My son is an avid hunter. All events revolve around hunting! He always shoots his own turkey and he cooks that and pheasants for Thanksgiving.

    My mom makes little tarts. She bakes the shells and then fills them with cheesecake filling or pie fillings. pumpkin and cherry etc.

    LOl Klue I am not a fan of Chinese flavors but we are going to go to a new restaurant just opened recently. It is called Family Buffet and they have primarily Asian foods. Mongolian/ Chinese / etc. DH and I went the other day to try it out. He loved it! He was in Viet Nam and has always refused to try Asian cooking. But he tried mussels on the shell / crawfish and a few other foods and loved it. My mom and my daughter's family all like Chinese. So that is going to be our Thanksgiving this year. They are serving turkey and crab legs for Thanksgiving.

    my husband does NOT want to ever have company or go any where on Thanksgiving day because the Dallas Cowboys always play that day so I bake 2 cornish hens and a pan of dressing. One year I talked hime into a 2 hr trip to his family's and we had to stay till the game was over and that made us very late getting home and I have to get up at 4am for work so I won't make that mistake again!

    My unusual tradition isn't centered around the food--I like to watch movies while I decorate for Christmas--but not Christmas movies. I watch the same 3 every year--Legends of the Fall, Titanic, and Pearl Harbor. I do this to keep my husband out of the way! LOL

    When the kids come its a full on tradition with the addition of beef raviolis with red sauce (not a real meal without them in the cold months) to start with (what meal is complete without those?) and biscotti for dessert.

    sure you can eat at my house.

    in NY people say that italian people center everything around food and i just have to laugh because it really is chinese people who surround their lives with food.

    the normal greeting when you talk to people is "hello" or "hi" the chinese opening greeting is "have you eaten".

    when you open the front door the first thing you're supposed to say is "have you eaten".

    We have traditional Thanksgiving food. One SIL says we are so boring because each year it is the same. Our DD says that is what tradition is.

    One thing we have started is EVERYONE helps in the kitchen. Each decide what they want to make and they do it.

    It's not a big enough thing to put in recipies section. So here we go: 1 cup of boiling water, with 1/2 cup sugar dissolved in it. Then 2 1/2 cups pineapple juice (I think frozen, reconstituted is best), and 4 cups cranberry juice. ( use cranberry juice coctail juice). Freeze in ice cube trays. Then fill the glass or goblet clear to the top with frozen cubes. Fill with Sprite. Let sit about 5 minutes. Yummy. We've been having this for about 30 years. And now my grown kids always make it at their dinners.

    My husband's brother David started doing something back when he was about 9. Just before the turkey goes into the oven, he punches it. I don't have a clue as to why, but Jim continues this tradtion.

    We lived in Germany for quite a few years before coming to Pat's home state. He always had the day off and my Mother invited us for dinner. "The poor boy" (did he have her fooled) got to pick whatever he wanted to eat, and on special occasions my Mom is a real good cook. When we came over here, we kept the non-tradition alive. When we stay home for Thanksgiving, DH gets to pick. This year it's pork roast, bread dumplings and cauliflower.

    I start my day with a spiked coffee and all is well from there on.

    Ours is always traditional. This year my DGD made a turkey centerpiece at her Daisy meeting. (She is 6) They wrote what they were thankful for on feathers and glued them to the turkeys behind. Her first feather said grandma in big blocky letters. I'm keeping this centerpiece forever.
