This is my practice cake, I'm going to make a lamborghini cake for my bf and his twin brother's birthday in september. I've never carved a cake before, nor used buttercream and fondant before, so that is why I needed to practice the recipes. I want to try using modelling chocolate next time, I think I can get some really awesome details with that. I've worked with sculpture, wood carving, and lots of other arts that would apply here in Fine Arts in college, so I think I have a good base to work with. If I do this again, the arms, legs, and toes will be sculpted in modelling chocolate, and the cake itself will be either mudcake or pound cake, this one was too moise and crumbly.

Be gentle, this is my first cake!

Oh, that's priceless! How do you keep the head from falling to the table?

Who knew there were such things as modelling chocolate and mudcake? What is mudcake, exactly?

Mudcake is just very dense, so when you're carving it, it doesn't crumble and fall apart. The whole body is carved from one big rectangle, the head is not stuck on, so it can't fall apart. I took left over cake from what I carved off to make the legs and eye bumps. I wish I had taken pics of it at several stages...

Also, the fondant looks kind of sloppy, I think I took too long to put it on and smooth it out. I would LOVE to try airbrushing onto cake!

The Lamborghini cake will be wicked hard!

I watch them both!!! I love playing with fondant and the other similar stuff...can't remember the name of it. My BFF is a cake decorator and I love to help her with them... It's more fun than playing with playdough when I was a kid :D :D I am trying to talk her into sculpting some, too!!

I think those shows play on TLC or FOOD network, I'm not sure. They're REALLY cool!

You might be able to find those shows on surfthechannel.com, if you have high speed internet, you can stream the episodes directly without having to download anything.

Ok, I just checked, cake boss isn't on there :( but ace of cakes has a few episodes.

ribbet!
You done good, melanie!
So, I'm thinking these cakes are cooked a little longer so they 'hold' up? Do they taste good, cause he looks great!
I used to fiddle some with kids birthday cakes, when they were growing up, but never carved anything. My mom took classes and she did some pretty nice stuff, ala Wilton style.
