Where to find “belting”used in thread catcher

I cut the top edge off a large yoghurt container. You know how they often have a 1/2o1 inch lip? I snipped it at one spot to give me an opening. Then I made a casing with a bit of extra room and threaded the plastic ring through it.
It has help up for about 5 years now. I did not try to secure the loop of plastic or stitch it closed. I did stitch the casing closed.
I used sand from the dollar store for the weight. I put it in a plastic baggy before I sewed it into the cushion part. Again it has held up for quite a long time.

Mac, you need to have something rigid to hold the thread catcher open when it is hanging off the edge of the table. The plastic straps that are used in packaging work, as do pieces of boning, or in my case the top edge of a large yoghurt container.

When I made mine, I cut a strip from the long side of my template plastic and it worked really well. I liked it because of thickness, I had also considered using a broken metal tape measure because of sturdiness. They are easy to cut and they keep their shape really well. I finally decided against it because I wasn't sure if it would kink up or break if bent.

Thanks for the picture, I was trying to figure where you were using the strapping. I made several of these years ago. My pattern called for aquarium tubing to hold the bag open. And the bag was attached to the top with Velcro so it could be detached and emptied easily.
