I think it belonged to Paul. At the end of the show he told Beth that she "dodged a bullet".

I think it was the gun that Paul's wife, Mary Ellen, shot herself with in the first season.

I think he was going to take her to the cabin to kill her. Much as I can't warm up to her, I'm glad it was Zac.
