Hi, I have only been quilting for a short time and really enjoy hand applique. I also enjoy patchwork but so far am a little afraid of quilting the projects I have made. Stitch in the ditch is ok but I'd like to try some more elaborate stitching, should I do it by hand or machine? Perhaps someone could help put my fears to rest!

Hi Pauline...welcome! I'm from CA also. About your quilt question...if your new to quilting but enjoy handwork, why not try hand quilting a small project? There are great online sources and books that will give you line drawings to transfer onto your work. Many stores have stencils. When I was learning, I thought it was very important to hand sew at first. My stitches got more even. All I had to purchase was a comfortable size hoop and my project became portable, another plus! But unless you're basically fearless at the machine, it has it's own bunch of complications; I'd try hand quilting a small piece first! Once you're addicted.... you'll have no fears!
