regarding purchasing, if it is something you LOVE buy 3-5 yards especially if you think you may later regret not having it.
However, never buy when you can't afford to, and if on budget buy for each project. They will continue to make fabric and there is never a need to go into debt for a pile of anything.

Welcome from North Carolina!
I always keep a lot of background, white on white, or off-white, and small patterns on hand because I tend to use a lot of those fabrics. If I catch them at a good price I buy as much as I can afford.
