Default Howdy y'all!!

Howdy from Texas, my name is Cathy. I am hoping that being on this blog/site I will become inspired to quilt the two tops that my late grandmother pieced together when she was in her early 20's. I guess I have been putting them off is because I want to do them justice and up to her standards. I have quilted in the past but it has been a few decades and I am a little rusty on my technique and the proper process of hand quilting. Hopefully I will be able to re-educate myself and get started on one before this fall.

Wish me luck!!

Cathy

Welcome to the board. How wonderful that you have a top from your Grandma!! I would love to see a picture of it and I'm sure others would too.

Welcome from Waterford Michigan! I do equally as much hand quilting as I do machine quilting depending on the quilt. Hand quilting of course takes much longer and I have found is not what I like for quilts that get a lot of use. They wear much faster. I will always hand quilt antique tops or show quilts, while bed quilts are most often machine quilted. There are a whole lot of well informed quilters here that can help you along the way. I wish you the best of luck

Howdy back from the Seattle area!

How lovely to have family pieces, I don't come from a tradition of quilters. Nothing wrong with practicing up a bit more but at some point you will have to dive on in. I know many people who have hand quilted a family top like this, sometimes it is the only one they ever do and other times it becomes something they enjoy. Me, the only handwork I do is handstitching the back of the binding but I admire all of the needle artists out there.

Hello & welcome to the quilting board. You are so fortunate to have 2 quilt tops from your grandmother. She would be very proud to know that you are wanting to finish the tops that she lovingly made. Since there are no rules when it comes to making a quilt I just wanted to let you know that many on this board have machine quilted tops that were hand pieced and many have hand quilted tops that were machine pieced. Do what is comfortable to you & what makes you happy. We would love to see pictures of the "before" finished and "after" finished tops. You will get a lot of help from this board.

Wow quilts your Grandmother when she was in her early 20's. I can't imagine the connection that will form as your quilting them. Hand quilting does seem like a good idea. Welcome and guess you will be busy.
