I would advise to go to a dealer and test drive theire low end machines. You might find that what you saw on Amazon is not what you want. Also if you buy from Amazon you won't get repairs and those very important classes that are usually offered with a new machine. I was in a QS that sold Baby Lock and they started at $99.00 and free classes were offered.

I would first check out classes around your area at LQS or Quilt Guilds. All you need to start is a good basic machine. Don't get sidelined by the fancy stitches. You can either purchase in a big box store or from a dealer. My dealer matches internet pricing so I get not only service but advice. It helps. There are lots of machines, just figure out what you want to pay and go from there.

I second the recommendation of a lower end mechanical Brother. Lessons really aren't needed on those machines, as near as I can tell, from personal experience, and if you save the receipt most places will let you return it if it doesn't work properly. Then, if you decide the sewing and quilting are something you want to continue, then you can decide if you want a vintage machine or an upgrade from the one you have. I have vintage machines and basic Brothers and one of my basic Brothers is my go to machine. You may want to look into quilting classes or look at the zillion You Tube videos on line. Craftsy is another place to learn things. Also, use the search feature on this board and I'm guessing you will find many many threads on just your topic. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi from Ohio! Everyone has a different opinion, but trying out machines is a great idea.
