I have an Elna Quilters Dream. It's over 11 years old and is in the shop for the first time ever. It has served me well. I would like a machine with more harp space as I'd really like to learn to FMQ.

I think a lot of sewing machine choices depend on what dealer is in your area. After I moved away from my dealer I traded it for one in my area and like the new machine just as well.

To me, the most important feature is a built in walking foot and secondly the harp space. I have two Pfaffs (one old and one new) and a Babylock Quest. Your seams are even, there are no bubbles and the visibility is excellent.

Doesn't matter the brand name. Any machine that you can turn on and it sews without a problem is the best one. I have a sewing frustration with one of my machines and basic changes or adjustments do not fix the problem I get rid of it. Not worth the frustration. I have had the Brother 1500 for years now and not one problem. I can turn it on and sew or free motion without any frustration at all.

I also think having a dealer close to you is important and can help determine what you get. I feel like the big brands all have equally nice machines and it comes down to budget, features, and proximity to someone that can fix it.
