http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...ilt-block.html Here's some info on doing paper piecing of this block and rotary cutting. I'm only on my first cup of coffee so I'll come back to this clue after a few more cups! Haven't decided how I'm going to make this block yet (Inklingo, Accuquilt, or a "Debbie" way). Hugs! Debbie

grandmasieg 12-27-2013 08:04 AM

http://www.generations-quilt-pattern...-the-air-3.pdf This should be the paper piecing PDF file. Just use your HST blocks as step 1 and 2 and then do 3, 4 and 5. It works! I cut up some triangles using my Accuquilt die cut for the blue.

quiltsRfun 12-27-2013 08:04 AM

It's getting interesting. Glad to see we're working with blue this week. Guess what? I've got a head start on the cutting. I accidentally cut too many of the 3-1/2 inch blue strips so I set them aside hoping we'd use them. But I need to starch my neutrals. Did that for clue 3 and it really helped. Wish I'd done it for clue 2. Off to work now but I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Emma S 12-27-2013 09:04 AM

Made about 10 using the regular piecing method, per Bonnie. Came out spot on. I've always disliked triangles so I count this as a triumph. Cathie, using the method you sited would the neutral block measure 2 x 2.75? Seems like using this method would make it go faster since you are making two halves at the same time.

you still have to be accurate but you don't actually sew on those triangles and thus easier.
Let me know if you try it out and what you think
I will be doing Inklingo for this step

i like this process but I don't know how to do it with when you have to use a HST

gardnergal970 12-27-2013 09:18 AM

I too used Bonnie's method but did sew toward the first seam with the second wing. When sewing the two halves together, I squared up the corner and held it in place with a clover clip. I matched the pieced block up to the triangle and eased if necessary to keep the pieced triangle matching the solid triangle. I haven't lost a point and only needed to trim those "ears". It takes me a little time but I really like the results especially when assembly starts.

grandmasieg 12-27-2013 09:58 AM

Clue #5 - One done!

1 Attachment(s)
Perfect! Yeah! This is the first block I feel comfortable with and like the results. I cut my blue triangles with the Accuquilt die and my neutral with the Accuquilt die. This one is for the design wall so I make sure I do them right. Right now, more coffee and then sewing. Still have to sew clue 4! Hugs! Debbie

Emma S 12-27-2013 11:12 AM

Gardnergal: I think you just use the half square triangle as if it is just a solid block. Make a modified four patch with the HST at opposite corners with the yellow turned toward the center. The neutral should be over sized so you have room to make your double seam in the middle. My problem is I don't know how much bigger that neutral block should me. I think I will make an experiment using 2.5 X 2 and see how it works out. I will let you know as soon as I have a result.

I don't see clue 5 posted. Have checked Bonnie Hunter's page and it is not posted.

Never mind, it finally posted and I was able to download!:)

KalamaQuilts 12-27-2013 02:08 PM

I have five groups of four finished plus a single I wasn't happy with. If I were being paid by piecework rates I'd be a starvin' pitiful person indeed. Going slow when working with all that bias is the only way I can get them right. Going to be a pretty addition to our units.

ligia 12-27-2013 02:47 PM

Beautiful colors and beautiful blocks ladies. IŽll wait till the mystery is revealed.
Inquiring minds wonder why EmmaŽs posts counting got stuck at 1.500 ... :D

Pagzz 12-27-2013 03:13 PM

see this tutorial. http://www.stitchingcircle.com/?p=1270 she is referencing Bonnie's Easy Street, but it looks like the same size for clue 5?

Looks like that will work if you don't already have the HSTs done from clue #3. I'm still plugging away on Clue #4! I'll alternate between 4 and 5 so I have variety! LOL!

Did you mean to say if you DO have the HST's from clue 3 finished? I've never made this block before so I'm a bit nervous. I was planning to try out her method along with the one suggested here this morning. I have all my HST's ready to go, along with my other fabric (although that needs a bit of repressing before I cut).

This mystery certainly is reinforcing some quilting skills for me. Once you make 100 of something, you definitely feel like you know how to do it! I've never felt comfortable with my flying geese. I wonder if she'll throw some of those in somewhere?

CindyA 12-28-2013 06:04 AM

Someone recommended using starch since so much of this is going to be on the bias. I think that's a good idea, but I don't often use starch. I have light body Magic Sizing. I like the product but I made a big ol' mess when spraying. It got all over my cutting board and all over the kitchen. At what point in the process do you use your starch? I pressed my yardage, then starched and allowed to dry, then pressed again, then cut.

I'm over halfway done with the HST and plan on finishing these up before I move on to clue 5.

Emma S 12-28-2013 06:43 AM

Ligia: I didn't even notice my land mark post. Did it get stuck at 1500? I clearly talk too much but that probably won't stop me.
Nilla: I so agree. I am not as afraid of triangles as I used to be and I really feel like I am mastering the rulers. I have admired several quilts using the block in clue #5 and now I have made 30 successfully! Just what I needed a whole new bunch of quilts to make.
Gardengal: I experimented with the method you referred to but my efforts turned out wonky. Right now I am perfectly happy to use Bonnie's method since I am happy with the results.

.

I prewash my fabrics (hot rinse in sink, wring, fling in dryer), fold them neatly and when I need that fabric I unfold about 1/2 yard, cut it off and then spray starch from the back side. Starch is just corn starch and water and some kind of ingredient to keep it mixed up. So when it dries what hits the floor pretty much just vacuums up, at least in my experience. If I know I'm going to cut bias I give it a second go over.
When I did the big plain triangles for my Dear Jane quilt I starched the fabric to nearly paper firm, worked like a charm for keeping those enormous bias sides in shape for attaching to the pieced triangles.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it :)
I got another 16 units made this morning. Slow but sure! I think this mystery is going to be one of the prettiest yet.

Cathieinut 12-28-2013 08:31 AM

HI quilters...it's fun to see how your mystery clue 5 is turning out!
As I mentioned I am using Inklingo and love Linda and Monkey's method however.... duh me
Didn't read the "cheat sheet" closely that Linda made to help us out and didn't notice the printing should be done in landscape NOT portrait...sigh so I will be short some of the printed shapes then...
yeah I think my little cheap-o printer has developed dementia...I have tried every trick to get it to print anything and it just sits there and blinks at me. DS has been feeling poorly so I haven't had him try and fix it but it's not looking good.
I have two other printers but neither are right for Inklingo for various reasons.
I have finished 34 blocks and have enough printed to do about 85 but I will have to either find a new printer or do the method that Sally Schneider does since I don't have the ruler that Bonnie uses and really don't want to buy one for just one project.
Anyway just to say it made my day frustrating trying to deal with the printer problem LOL

Nila...you are so right that doing a project like this really allows you to stretch beyond what you can already do. Think of all the things you have learned and new projects you can do in the future

Kalama...me too with the piece rate comment LOL I ripped out more than I sewed yesterday as I didn't pay attention to placement with my parts and pieces.

Everyone the end is coming soon! I think we might start putting units together next week

So far, so good. Only one of clue 5 done but it came together pretty well. I've also included the paint chips I used to choose my colors.

JeanieG 12-28-2013 04:30 PM

Oh so pretty quiltsRfun! That is going to be a marvelous quilt. I've got all of Steps 1-4 done, and about 20 of Step 5. Got caught up after Christmas!

Tweety2911 12-29-2013 05:50 AM

QuiltsRfun your colors are wonderful and your blocks look great!

I made two test blocks for Clue 5 and they measure accurately! I (finally!) finished all my HSTs and put the first pinwheel together.

Too bad I have so much housework and laundry I need to get done today. I probably won't have time to work on this any more today.

quiltsRfun 12-29-2013 07:03 AM

Cindy, your blocks look great. Clue 5 wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

Nilla 12-29-2013 03:19 PM

I finished the 100 blocks, although I still have about 40 to square up. I also went ahead and made an extra 15-20 because this block was harder than the others and I figured some might not work out. Sure enough, I've put 4 aside already that didn't square up well. They can probably be fixed, but I'll have extra just in case.

I hope we start putting it all together next week.

Cathieinut 12-29-2013 09:08 PM

Cindy A love those blocks and they are looking very very good! Hope you get back to them really soon...I will admit that the house could be neater but with both DH home from work for Christmas vaca and youngest son too the dishes have never been caught up LOL but I did clean the bathroom before sewing yesterday. hee hee

Nilla Way To Go! I am with you on having some extras just in case...but I aim for 3 or 4. You can always use the misfits in a practice project or something.

I have 88 blocks done and only 12 left to finish. I might get them done early tomorrow. I haven't gotten a picture taken for the Linky party yet hoping to have the last finished.
I am kind of surprised how easy it has been to keep up as I have heard so many comments online that the quilts are very challenging...I guess I am experienced enough that even though they weren't the easiest units I didn't have much trouble except for those chevrons and I just needed to try a different method and they worked out pretty well in the end.
Good luck to everyone this week and hope we see more pics soon...including mine

sewmany 12-29-2013 09:25 PM

Nice looking blocks, ladies.
finally got to sew today. I am on step 2. It took 2hrs to mark an angle on the 488 2" sqs. Hope to make progress tomorrow.

Suze9395 12-29-2013 10:25 PM

I am finally caught up! WooHoo!
I have been using Bonnie's construction methods. I am so pleased with the way everything has been coming out. I haven't used the TriRecs rulers before, and although I have owned the Easy Angeler for years this is the first time I have used it as well.
This is my first Mystery, and I love it. It has really helped me get more comfortable with triangles...not my favorite shape to work with.

tellabella 12-29-2013 11:11 PM

I made about 30 step 5 blocks...I had to square up a bit and then as I was going along I realized I have less than the 1/4 inch I need on some of them so that when I join them I am going to lose the points...I think...I am going to try to move the needle position over a smidge to see if that helps....they are not difficult if you do assembly line steps...

oh oh and just before starting this clue I realized I had only made 100 4 patch instead of the 120 I was supposed to for clue 4...so I had to make 20 more of those first

Nilla 12-30-2013 04:43 AM

I found a site where the lady did a mathematical analysis of the clues so far. She guesses that next week we'll do more tri-recs with orange and neutrals. I think she guessed 92 for the small size and 140 for the large. Who knows if she's right, but it will be fun to see...

pjnesler 12-30-2013 06:35 AM

Another block in the works

1 Attachment(s)
I started step 5 - I'm really surprized at myself for moving on to the next steps before completing the previous one - I had to give myself permission to do as Bonnie said. Previously I'd not start another step until I was done with the 1-2-3 etc....

gardnergal970 12-30-2013 09:07 AM

Tellabella...thanks for your comment about the number of blocks for clue 4. I was 20 short too! Almost done with that, finished piecing clue 5 but have a lot of pressing and trimming to do. I'm convinced that it's the width of the line on my ruler that gives me the extra thread width on ocassion. :D:D

Cathieinut 12-30-2013 10:06 AM

1 Attachment(s)
Yeah...I too ended up short on my HST but that was because I had run out of ink on my printer and didn't get them done for that clue and just let it slide out of my mind LOL

I am hoping that she will be putting in some unpieced squares or triangles to complete the design but I think there is probably one more unit we are going to add...but you never know

quilt addict 12-30-2013 02:41 PM

All the work and color combinations are great to look at. I just am back home and did not get any piecing done while I was visiting family. I have about 1/3 of the chevrons done last night. So I think this week I will try to make a dent into steps 3 and 4. Step 5 will have to wait until this weekend I think. Have to starch some more fabric before cutting tonight.

Tweety2911 12-30-2013 04:01 PM

CindyA, pjnesler and Cathieinut your blocks look great!

grandmasieg 12-31-2013 12:19 PM

Just loving everyone's fabric and blocks! I just finished sewing my last 4 patch. Just need to press and trim and then I'll continue on with clue 5. Clue 5 = 20 done!

KalamaQuilts 12-31-2013 01:46 PM

I think if I piece my blue scraps back together I might have a fat 1/8th left :)

I've been doing 20 blocks (#5) a day to spread out the fun. If I have a set of 4 laid out by the machine they take 10-11 minutes to finish all 4.
I didn't do linky this week, I'm staying away from people guessing at what the blocks will be.

All the color combos above are Tony The Tiger GREAT!

See you all next year!

Yay, I got my Clue 5 finished in time to shovel snow tonight and a big storm is heading our way Thursday. Glad they are done for I shall be to tired to move a muscle when all snow is cleared away!

sewmany 12-31-2013 05:16 PM

i thought I was doing so well on step 2 with cutting and making 144 for the left side and 144 for the right. Then BEHOLD I am needed additional 144. How did my brain calculate 488 to being 144?
The Small size quilt looking very tempting, right now.

grandmasieg 12-31-2013 10:10 PM

Bonnie has posted the reveal tonight! http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2014/...se-reveal.html Wow! It is awesome! Now to get finished with clue #5 and start assembling the quilt top! Happy New Year!
