Nilla 01-01-2014 03:13 AM

Oh my goodness, I didn't expect it to wrap up so quickly. It's lovely! I guess I'll be starting the new year sewing! I want to get at least a few blocks done and up on my design wall so I can see how it looks with my colors. How exciting!

Tellabella...thanks for your comment about the number of blocks for clue 4. I was 20 short too! Almost done with that, finished piecing clue 5 but have a lot of pressing and trimming to do. I'm convinced that it's the width of the line on my ruler that gives me the extra thread width on ocassion. :D:D

the other clues were 100 so it was easy to get mixed up...for me...I got all finished my clue 5 yesterday so I am all caught up...I've never done one of these before so it will be interesting to see...I am not fond of square quilts so I am thinking of adding another horizontal row or two once I see the layout...if it looks good...I too was thinking of making the big one until I saw the gazillion pieces to cut...lol...

gardnergal970 01-01-2014 05:40 AM

I love the two blocks together. I'm using her two colors too but can't wait to get some of my own on the design wall. I had other plans for today but as they say, "the best laid plans of man":D:D Happy new year everyone. Looking forward to your reveal over the next weeks.

CindyA 01-01-2014 06:09 AM

Wow! That Bonnie really caught me off guard with this! I LOVE this quilt and can't wait to keep working on it.

Emma S 01-01-2014 06:17 AM

Was going to do my post holiday cleaning but now I just want to go get busy in my sewing room. Really love the quilt, what a marvelous New Years present! Happy New Year everyone!
Please, please post your blocks when you finish the first couple. I know its early, but what is everyone thinking about on the quilting?

Nilla 01-01-2014 06:51 AM

Tellabella, I agree that generally I prefer rectangle quilts rather than square so I might follow your lead and add another row or two. We'll see. I can't wait to get a few blocks up on my design wall!

KalamaQuilts 01-01-2014 07:42 AM

Akk! Guess I'd better get my last 20 units finished before I go look!

SheriR 01-01-2014 08:54 AM

I love it too. It will be perfect for my son! He doesn't have a king sized bed though so I'm considering taking two rows OFF the king. I can use extra pieces on my backing! Do y'all think it would work?

I love it also. Was so excited I had to make one of each block.

Emma S 01-01-2014 10:49 AM

Helen: So pretty, I went with Bonnie's colors too but the thing about scrappy is even the same colors look so different. I am going to succumb to temptation and make at least two. No one will ever know the housework has been put off for another day. You know what they say, you will end the year as you start it. Sounds like a good deal to me.

grandmasieg 01-01-2014 11:11 AM

Just had to put together each block!

Still working on clue #5 but I had to put together one of each block. They are not perfect but I am thrilled with them! I don't believe the quilt police are working today since it's a holiday! Happy New Year to all! Hugs! Debbie

KalamaQuilts 01-01-2014 11:32 AM

OoooOOOOooo our pretty preciousses...

I've always wanted to make one of these quilts, now I will have. And will definitely use the trex rulers again
Absolutely lovely.
Sheri, it's your quilt, do whatever you want to do!
I am making the small one 75X75 but that isn't a size I'd use so my plan was to take a side and put it on the bottom.
I'll have to play with some blocks to see if that would work with this quilt.

And how fun is it to already have our border units finished :)

Ohhhh, great job everyone! I have not finished Step 5 yet, about half done! Don't know if I will get started on putting it together today or not. Gotta get the Christmas Decorations put away first! UGH.

quiltsRfun 01-01-2014 12:34 PM

Looking good, everyone! I'm so happy that I can use my "mistake" tri-recs for the border. I'll alternate a yellow and a red. YAY!.

grandmasieg 01-01-2014 12:36 PM

Christine - Absolutely stunning! Both of them you brave quilter! I might have to make another one also in Christmas prints!

wishfulthinking 01-01-2014 01:25 PM

I've also wanted to make this quilt and am excited to see it coming together. Everyone's blocks are wonderful! I have a question about pressing. I know when sewing the units together for the 54/40 or fight blocks Bonnie said to press toward the orange four patches and away from the star points, but how are you pressing when sewing your rows together to form the block? Open, or to one side or can they be spun like the four patches? I've only made one block so far. Thanks!

Cathieinut 01-01-2014 01:54 PM

Whoo-hoo...just found that the reveal came unexpectedly at midnight while I slept LOL

I am going to fiddle around with it a bit but I have another NY Day project to finish LOL I am loving that some of you have shared at least one block of each. Linda Franz at Inklingo has prepared alternate layouts in case someone wanted to do something different
http://www.lindafranz.com/blog/bonni...lingo-clue-06/

As for me I have a small pieced quilt top that I am going to try and incorporate into my quilt to make it fit my bed and I really love the small quilt but don't have anyplace to display it.

nellie 01-01-2014 02:41 PM

oh I all like all the different colors ,can,t wait to see them all done ,good work on blocks ladies

Caroline S 01-01-2014 02:42 PM

Everyone's blocks are looking ever so good. I decided to go back and finish Clue 1, then 2, then 3 etc. Otherwise I will get lost in the fabric explosion that has taken place in my sewing space.

Oh my I see I have hit 3500 posts. Don't know whether that is good or bad.

 It a good thing. I wonder if i will ever reach 200....

gardnergal970 01-01-2014 03:50 PM

I got 12 of each block done but I have to trace an appliqué pattern before I have room for all of them on the design wall. My blue is really navy so the secondary pattern is showing up beautifully. I love it! I'll try to post a picture tomorrow when the light is better.

CindyA 01-01-2014 06:06 PM

Love everyone's blocks! Thanks for posting pictures.

This was my first Bonnie Mystery. I hope I get more put together so I can post another picture before everyone stops visiting this thread. Was that our last/final clue?

This was fun. I assume she does this every year about the same time. If so, I'm in for next year!

nellie 01-02-2014 12:14 AM

ok for clue which method did you find easy to make ,I,m asking since they were 2 other methods besides Linda,s and monkey ,I still need to finish clue 4 and 5 ,I know im very slow and do sewing between cleaning and cooking

Here are my first two blocks. A snafu is my colors in the pin wheel are reversed but I looked at the overall design and don't think it will make a difference. Yes I made every last one of them wrong. The colors are really much more vibrant than they show in the picture. I'm loving the way this quilt is going together.

nellie 01-02-2014 10:57 AM

oh I forgot to put clue 5 is the one im taking about the method used sorry about that

Emma S 01-02-2014 11:21 AM

Nellie: I just used Bonnie's method because it worked for me. There was another method mentioned that made two at a time by making the neutral 2.75 X 2 and placing the HST at opposite corners. This creates two of the light side when you cut them down the center. Then you just join them to a blue triangle. If you scan back to last Friday there is a web site mentioned. Hope this helps.

KalamaQuilts 01-02-2014 01:18 PM

I got 3 of the star blocks sewn last night.
Realized this morning all three had mistakes.
Realized after I ripped and resewed...
Doh...If the blocks aren't stacked identically, you might think you had a 4 patch backwards.
The things you learn when you open your eyes.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to reverse the chevrons.
My star points don't stand out as much as I'd like but my colors are so pretty!

I'll get some images up when I've done some of the chevron blocks finished

quilt addict 01-02-2014 01:54 PM

Well just stopped by to see what everyone is up to. I didn't realize that the reveal was out. Wowzer there are some beautiful quilts that are going to come together. I have not started step 5 so cannot but anything together yet. I did different colors so I hope that they will show the design. I have been thinking my pinwheels don't have a good difference in value but hopefully they are okay.

Tweety2911 01-02-2014 04:05 PM

Beautiful blocks Emma S!!

CindyA 01-02-2014 06:35 PM

Very nice, Emma! No, I don't think the direction of the pinwheel is going to change the design. I'll have to check mine - good chance mine are other direction, too! I put a bunch of one of the clues together backwards and had to reverse sew quite a bit (the error on that one DID make a difference!).

I just saw on the blog that she's giving us a few weeks off and we'll have time to catch up and put blocks together. So, I guess no more clues but we can just keep working.

nellie 01-03-2014 12:49 AM

love colors Emma and thank you for tip will check back posts i,ve might have miss it thanks

Cathieinut 01-03-2014 05:11 AM

Emma I agree that it won't make a difference what direction your pinwheels are spinning...just as long as they spin the same.
CindyA I too am glad she is giving a couple of weeks for quilt construction...of course there will be those eager beavers who will have the quilt quilted by then and some who haven't even started. I am going to have to slow down with the construction as I have a new GrD due in Feb and need to get a quilt made and to the quilter's soon. I will try and do a few blocks in between the baby quilt steps but it is a twist and turn so hopefully it will go together quickly and then I can get back to it again.
I currently have 8 blocks assembled and 4 more laid out ready to piece. I will take a picture when it gets more light outside.

QuiltedCello 01-03-2014 07:07 AM

Got all the blocks together - it's pretty on my personal quilt, but in the very stark contrast, I do NOT like the 2nd block. Oh well, it's been fun :)

What, it's only 9 patches, it's easy to sew together.

BellaBoo 01-03-2014 07:32 AM

I used the Go and have all my block pieces cut and kitted up. It will be my sewing project at an April retreat I'm going to. I didn't think I'd like any of her patterns better then Double Delight but this may take it's place.

Nilla 01-03-2014 07:57 AM

Is anyone else having a hard time getting all the points and seams to match when putting the blocks together? I don't normally have a problem with everything matching up, but I sure am with this quilt. I'm only just now happy with the first two blocks I put together and took apart and re-put together a few times. I think putting the whole top together will be a long, tedious project for me.

Yes, especially those darn cheverons!!!! I put mine aside because for now I figured it would be tedious also in getting it together for the same reason. It was driving me nuts so I figured oh well I give up do the best I can and go with it. Bonnie's is not perfect so if hers isn't then neither will mine ;)

I agree that the chevrons are the hardest. I decided to put a few of the stars together for now and worry about the chevrons another day.

gardnergal970 01-03-2014 09:01 AM

The tri peak blocks were the hardest for me to square up and then not lose the points. I know that it's as much the cutting as it is the sewing and pressing. Next time I'll consider using Lingo. I still love the quilt. The two blocks together make such a neat pattern.
