Belfy - I really like that orange-red color with the others. Good choice!

Yarn or Fabric 11-02-2013 04:07 AM

I might actually get to do this one... We'll see :) I passed the info along to my quilt guild to see if anyone else will be doing it.

sandyl 11-02-2013 04:22 AM

This is my first mystery also. And I have shared info with others in our group and they are interested (at least 4). I plan to use my stash as long as possible. When I run short of a color then I will be forced to go purchase from LQS. ha Because this is my first mystery I will be using Bonnie's colors due to her experience and my lack of.

I agree that it needs to be moved. I've been keeping an eye out for a thread in the BOM section, and only found this one because I broke down and did a search.

I started it in the main quilting section, but mods moved it here. Perhaps someone could ask if we could have it moved back?
My first post was meant to say more than just the link but the UPS guy drove in so I just posted the link.

I have my fabrics chosen, Olive, bright blue, orangey-red, and teal. all from stash, only enough for the smaller quilt but I don't need any more big quilts anyway. I've been working from stash since 2001.

The fabrics I chose were as close to solid as I could find in my stash. Each year I try something new for the mystery and I though this year I try for something in the Amish/Modern flavor. NO GRAY though :) I'm the poster child for depression and gray anything washes across me like a dirty ocean.

George Carlin had a piece about 'stuff' and what we can carry with us if we have to go somewhere, and then if we have to go somewhere else from there until you are down to what is in your pockets.
I am taking care of my mom in a borrowed house with no stairs and lots of light. Great for mom, but I don't have my quilt room.
I have a card table, the sewing cabinet w/vintage machine, the small ironing board, and stuff for the mystery I could grab from home in the 5 minutes I felt it was safe to leave her in the car (88, late stage dementia)
I am so grateful my stash is organized so I could run and grab! Took two weeks to do it a couple of years ago but worth every minute!

More than anyone wanted to know but I am happy with what I've pulled together in the empty living room. I'll get a picture of my fabrics and sewing area up soon.

JeanieG 11-02-2013 01:59 PM

Kalama - since you started this thread, why don't you check with Patrice about having it moved? This is definitely not the place for it especially once we start getting the actual weekly instructions.

I am looking forward to this mystery! I haven't posted much on this board for a few years as work was very demanding, but I am retired now and hope to be here more. I have fabrics sorted and need to decide whether to do a light background or dark purple background. Here are pictures of my two color choices. Think I may call it Ojai Autumn. Maybe I should just make two!? I'll be out of town for two weeks, but back just in time for the first clue. :)

Quilting Librarian - it is a small world, I live in Camarillo!

I think you should use the lighter background. I don't think there will be enough contrast if you use the Purple. Just my opinion. I love the fabric you have chosen though - just beautiful!

quiltsRfun 11-04-2013 10:41 PM

Great choices everyone. I agree with Jeanie on quilting librarian's choices. But I usually favor a light background. I'm still gathering fabric but hope to have a photo to post soon.

Blue Bell 11-05-2013 07:20 AM

Quilting librarian,
I like the lighter background. You have picked out wonderful fabrics.

Also, does anyone know if her mysteries tend to lend themselves to 2.5 inch squares? I have about a zillion of those!

I have the ruler sets and use them all the time. They were bought for a lqs Sampler-of-the-Month class several years ago.

*LOL* I'll be working on last year's Easy Street which I was unable to start until last February. Ultimately before cutting into any of my beautiful greens, I decided Easy Street looked too "GREEN!!!" and bought a fabulous autumn orange-y/cranberry/tiny bits of yellow batik to take their place. Life got in the way of working on Easy Street but I'm looking forward to vicariously following along with you all as "we" work on Celtic Solstice.
:)

goldbeacher 11-05-2013 11:35 AM

I've been wanting to do one of Bonnie's mysteries and I think you all have convinced me to jump in and join the fun. I love the autumn colors-off to my stash!

I have the tri-recs ruler and for me it was worth getting.

Bonnie uses lots of 2-1/2 inch squares but it's anybody's guess what she'll do with this particular quilt. You can go to here website and find lots of patterns to use your squares if they can't go into this one.

Loving it ql just loving it.

I live in Camarillo too. very small world and several other board folks are also from this area.

Seems this is a resource thread, seems the right place to me.

Fraew 11-06-2013 06:43 PM

Hey girls! Great to see repeats from the Easy Street thread. ES still needs binding...would love to make that happen before we start this one.

The recommended colors are not my favorite but I'd rather blame Bonnie for poor color choice rather than me. :)

I am going with Civil War Celtic Solstice; Bonnie's colors in yummy civil war greens, blues, golds and cheddar! I can't wait. I'll post a pic of my colors soon.

This was my first thought but not enough in my stash. But a gal in my guild told me at a guild function if I really want to do Civil War come over to her house she just finished some quilt tops that were Civil War and she has plenty of scraps. May take her up on that but if not... I have sorted and have off white, red, yellow, blue, green to work with I do have a Triple Irish Chain on my king size bed in blue, red and yellow now so not sure if I want to go this way. But I am sticking to the smaller size no matter what colors choices I end up with.

Yes Fraew - good to see you here! My Easy Street was finished (the flimsy) in late January, but it is still sitting in it's box waiting to be sandwiched and quilted. I just finished quilting Orca Bay from year before last, just have to bind it! I can get them put together, but have a time getting them back out and finished.:D

SheriR 11-07-2013 05:19 AM

I'm so glad Fraew sent me the link to this thread. I had a great time doing Easy Street. I'm going to try to get its borders on before our first clue here. I think I'll be sticking with Bonnie's colors. My son loves orange and his birthday is in February. If I can keep up with the clues maybe I'll have it done for that???

My husband works at the paint counter at HD ... asking him to pick up the paint sample cards for me today!

Linda and her Inklingo program is linking up with Bonnie

See revealed her fabrics and such what today.

Nilla 11-10-2013 06:00 PM

This is my first mystery quilt with Bonnie, so I have a few questions. First, so far all I've seen is the list of colors and yardage needed. Has there been anything else and somehow I've missed it? When will she tell us what size and how much to cut? I'm worried she'll tell us on a busy week for me and I'll fall behind right away. Second, how much of a variety do most people use in fabric? I have my paint color things, but I can pull in any other shades and patterns of those colors that compliment the 4 colors on the paint thing, right? 4 shades would be boring. Sorry for the newbie questions and thanks in advance for any clarification you can offer me! Anything else you think I should know? I'm open to any helpful hints I can get!

Quiltaddiction 11-10-2013 06:54 PM

I am also going to be doing Bonnie's mystery quilt I am so looking forward to starting on the 29th. I am using autumn tones and gathering neutrals. This will be my second Bonnie Quilt. Easy Street is at the long armers. I will have to decide what to bind it with.

SheriR 11-10-2013 09:03 PM

Nilla, I used about 15 different fat quarters of each color on last years mystery. Variety is good as long as the majority of the color in your fq is orange or green or whatever. That's my opinion. :D

And yes all we have now is colors and quantity. Her first clue will begin our sewing and well get a new clue once a week until she's done. Six to eight weeks??? I think. :D

Nilla - like Sheri said, Bonnie will post a new set of instructions each week starting Nov. 29th. You will have a week to finish those instructions. She posts every Friday until the big Reveal! I do not use as many fabrics as Sheri, here is what I have collected so far, as you can see, I still need some more Greens.

Nilla 11-11-2013 03:26 AM

Thank you ladies. It's good to be able to come here and make sure I'm understanding correctly. I think I have plenty of greens, blues and yellows. I'm substituting pink for orange. I've got a good bit, but think I'll try to find at least a few more of the darker, raspberry shade.

Is one week usually enough to keep up while still working on other projects and keeping up with life's responsibilities or do you simply follow enough of the instructions in that week to remember what to do for the rest of the quilt when you get to it?

I know it might be silly, but I'm really looking forward to getting in on this. I've never done a mystery quilt before!

If life does interfer with this mystery at any step, Bonnie encourages us to do at least a sample of that step so that we know what is to be done. For example, step 3 may require using step 2 in some way so having at least a sample of each step is necessary. If you want a truly scrappy quilt, use as many different fabrics as possible. It's a place to use up all of those odd leftovers even if it is only for a couple of pieces. A more controlled scrappy would use fewer fabrics. If you look through her patterns on her site, totally scrappy can give beautiful results. Because it is over the holidays, falling behind can be expected so don't beat yourself if you do. I met a woman last summer who was just finishing up Easy Street from last year and the last clue was around the first of the year. Mysteries are a time to step outside the box and experiment with something new. Bonnie gives good instructions and you will have good results!

:p I managed to lose this thread twice.

Is there any way it can be moved to BOMs?

chickadee_42us 11-14-2013 02:12 PM

I'm going to be a mystery quilter too. Since it's my first with Bonnie, I am very glad to see so many here are participating too. Haven't purchased or gone through my stash yet for fabric's & I am going with Bonnie's colors - I do have the paint cards!

I just finished folding my selections for the mystery. I veered alittle from Bonnie's colors. I want to give it to my son on his birthday in February. I think he'll like brown and teal more than blue and green. I'm only using the one neutral you see in front.

JeanieG 11-14-2013 03:52 PM

Ohhh, very pretty colors Sheri! I'm sure your son will love it!

peaceandjoy 11-14-2013 04:00 PM

Sheri, that is going to be a stunning quilt. I'm looking forward to seeing it - and all of them, really - as the clues come out!

frustratedquilter40 11-14-2013 07:56 PM

SheriR ooh I love your batiks they are gorgeous!!! Can't wait too see yours come together :)

Pilgrim 11-14-2013 09:15 PM

My computer is in the shop. The printer is down and I am using my husbands. Hope I can get everything up and running before long as I can't print instructions for this mystery quilt.

fabric lover 11-15-2013 03:19 AM

wow, very nice colors!

jclinganrey 11-15-2013 05:32 AM

I'm in too. This will be my 2nd Bonnie Hunter mystery. I went through my stash and orange really isn't one of my colors - have very little of it. So, I'm either going to do red/yellow/blue/green or pink/yellow/blue/green.

Great colors posted so far!!! I'm really happy to see this thread. We're going to have lots of fun.

Jane

I've already PMed Patrice, but my experience tells me she probably will ignore my request. Maybe if others who have more standing on this board also PMed her?

gardnergal970 11-15-2013 09:23 AM

Maybe the thing to do is to start a new thread in the BOM section with a link back to this for those that want to check out other's color choices. We still have two weeks of waiting and just might find a lot more interested BH fans!
