2013 Bonnie Hunter Mystery Celtic Solstice
|
Can't wait to start this
|
I think I'm going to play along, too.
|
I intend to follow along too and print out the steps.
|
I usually don't care to do mystery quilts, most of the time I don't find them very attractive when they're done. But Bonnie does so well with hers! I might have to play along on this one!
Sharyn, are you going to make one from your stash? And hopefully post progress pictures on your blog??? :) |
My favorite mystery quilt of her's has been Double Delight. I save all her mystery patterns even if I don't make them at the time.
|
Glad to see a number of us are in for the journey :)
Peckish said: Sharyn, are you going to make one from your stash? And hopefully post progress pictures on your blog??? Yes, I have a quiltville mystery blog just for the linkys http://quiltvillemysterykalamaquilts.blogspot.com/ Right now it just shows past years mysterys I've been making quilts strictly from stash since 2001. Makes me a lot more creative! I never had an enormous stash to begin with and I've been making quilts (pieced both sides) and don't seem to have made much of a dent. Must be though as for past mysteries I've used orange/green/yellow/blue so those won't be an option this year. I like those colors together though so I expect those following Bonnie's color guide will be happy with their results. This year I'm caring for my mother full time (88 with late stage dementia) so doing the mystery and enjoying her company at the same time makes me a happy camper. |
Thank you! I've bookmarked it. :D
|
Sharyn I am with you using stash, but her colors are great but orange is not that plentiful. So considering yellow, red, green, blue. Also will be going with a beige neutral as my whites are depleted from the last 2. Would of loved purple but not one I have enough of. Was considering Civil War but short there also so still contempating choices.
I am going to do the smaller size as I already have 2 king size quilts for my bed and another in process. I have completed meaning quilted and bound Easy Street my first BH quilt, completed Lazy Sunday. In process Tulip Fields have all the paper piecing done on that one. Can't wait to see others color choice selections. |

My mom and I are both participating again this year. Last year was our first time making a mystery quilt and we loved it and our Easy Street quilts. Mom will be using all of Bonnie's colors, but I am going to substitute the orange with pinkish, raspberry type reds. These are my fabrics so far.
|
Let's get this party started!
|
Thanks for the link. I'd hate to miss it.
|
laurlync, you and your mom have a great selection of yellows. Funny how that color is the least stocked in the shops.
Great overall selection too! I kept my fabrics like your mom's, in a box stacked on edge like that last year. It was so easy to pull what I wanted, cut some off to press and cut, and put the rest back neatly. It also kept the cutting table a LOT neater ;) |
Wow I love those colors - this is going to be a happy, bright quilt. I might have to re-think my decision to stand back and watch.

I'm going with Autumnal Equinox... Primary colors aren't me!
A friend and I shopped our way to a retreat last week; the large leaf print is one of the fabrics I purchased. It will be worked into a border. Possibly doing the smaller quilt (not many think of 75" as small, lol) and a wide outer border? Will depend on the layout, I guess. The colors from my phone aren't the best, but I never use a camera any more - am not sure where it is! |

It will be beautiful!!! |
I dont know if I can wait till the end of November...and YET..I have so much to do. All I want to do is stash dive! ::;stay on task....stay on task:::!
|
Bonnie recommends the easy angle ruler and Tri Recs tools. Do you have them? Are they worth getting?
Also, does anyone know if her mysteries tend to lend themselves to 2.5 inch squares? I have about a zillion of those! |
I have never done a Bonnie mystery before. I am hoping to be able to use some of my 2.5 inch strips. I am going with Bonnie's colours.

Lauralync, I love your colors. but I also love Peace and Joy's. Decisions... I maybe go different than Bonnie's colors because I have a lot of purple I would like to use up.
|
Ooooh, those autumn colors are gorgeous too! Dang nabbit. I'm getting sucked in by all your fabric tractor beams.
|
I too cannot wait for November 29th! Even though I have a ton to do between now and then lol.
The colors for this year's mystery are my favorites! But I think I am going to make it in a different colorway because every quilt I made this year was yellow, orange and blue or yellow, orange and green lol, well, almost every quilt. Feeling the desire to work with red. I am in the process of reorganizing my sewing room, as I am putting things back, I will be seeing what in my stash needs reduction and go from there:) Lisa, the rulers are not a must as she gives directions for other ways but I bought them for last year's mystery and have been loving using them since then. I find I get much better accuracy with them than the short cut methods but I am not a every experienced piecer and I do like that I can use smaller fabric pieces with these rulers. And 2.5' strips are a size she uses but since this is a mystery, there is no telling what sizes will be used. But we have used them in the past in her mysteries I believe. Loving fabric selections posted so far. |
Thanks for the info! If 2.5 inch squares end up being usable, I'll not have to worry about my neutrals.
|
I.m doing Bonnies Mystery also. I got 3 others in our sewing group to join in on it too.
Just waiting to get her first installment--Yahooooooo. I love her quilts. Even did up Lazy Sunday, in Quiltmaker magazine. |
I'm in on this mystery too! I've done her last three! Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll is on my bed right now, and I'm in the process of quilting Orca Bay. Easy Street is finished and still in a box, but next on my quilting agenda. I "think" I'm going with Bonnie's colors too.
Lauralyn - I cannot believe how beautifully your fabric matches those paint chips! WOW!!! Peaceandjoy - I love your autumn colors too. Ladies those are going to be beautiful quilts. |
I think this is going to be a beautiful quilt, the colors are great. I told myself, "finish you old projects first".
Who knows if I'll listen. lol |
Peaceandjoy, I love your colors!!
I'm generally not a primary color type person and thought of changing all my colors but decided to just go with it. I wasn't sure about the color combination for Easy Street because they just seemed a bit too bright/wild, but once it was complete, I loved it!! Mom and I are going to the Houston Quilt Festival this week and are taking our paint chips, so our stashed may grow a little for this mystery. LOL!! |
I'm in too and was glad to see this thread started. I needed neutrals and picked up a few FQs the day she posted the chips. I'll start from here and add more if needed. Some of my fabrics aren't much more than scraps. In the meantime, I want to see how many project boxes I can empty. I'll have a drawer of flimsys and will figure out what to do with them later.
|
I will be doing the Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt too. Good to see there is a place here to report. The plan is to use my stash. Trying not to buy more fabric. I've kept fabric purchases to a minimum for last number of years. ..my attempt at making do. Let's see how this works out for me. ..making due I mean.
:) |
I love both the colorways you've posted Lauralyn & Peace & Joy. I'm going to try to stick w/ my stash this year. Last year I did use about half my fabric from stash.. Could use more pics of colorways to give me some more ideas. Don't have much of the greens & oranges left since the Easy Street Mystery. Actually I love to see all that fabric.:)
|
Jumped right in on the Easy Street mystery last year...chose different coloring as I'm a "nature" color kinda person, lol, it turned out great but was stressful because I was worried about the colors coming together right. Soooo, had decided not to do another mystery, but everyone's excitement is starting to make me reconsider...heehee. I know I could wait til the end to see what it is before starting, but for some reason I don't like the feeling of being "behind" :D
|
I am going to do this, but I am going to change the colors since I can't afford to buy a bunch of colors not in my stash - i'm thinking of calling mine Celtic Sunset and doing blue, green, pink and yellow. I may try to figure out a way to stick some purple in there, as well. I'm going to go pick up the paint cards Bonnie picked and pick the ones also in the colors I want, and go from there.
|
I love all last 3 mysteries i done. Easy street i changed colors just to learn to stick with her color choices.
|
Can you imagine being the guy who works the paint counter? Wondering why all of a sudden the stock of those particular paint chips is down? :D

Will this thread be moved to the BOM section or will there be a new thread started there? I doubt that people will look for it here.
|
I'm joining in too, Can't wait to get started. Just not sure if I will go with all the color choices as I too want to use up my stash. Last year when I did a BOM I picked/used oranges, yellows, blues, greens and browns. So hoping I have enough left over and that will work!

I don't have a Lowe's close to me, so printed off the picture of the paint chips. I don't have much that really matches, but want to use 80% from my stash, so here is what I came up with. Will add to each pile to end up with 6-7 fabrics in each group. I'm going with a definite orange-red as I don't like pure orange, plus didn't have any in my stash.
