I thought Kona cotton was consistently good quality. Isn't it like saying "Moda Bella Solids," meaning it's the same manufacturer and product? Was what you ordered defective, do Kona cottons vary in quality from one lot to another, or was it not really Kona cotton that you ordered?

You need to be careful about the exact brand name. My understanding is that Kaufmann Kona solids are the good ones; they are available online at a decent price from Hancock's of Paducah. Kona Bay solids are from a completely different company. "Kona" alone is not enough to tell you if it is the better quality fabric.
Apparently "Kona cotton solids" is not enough either. It has to be "Kona cotton solids" *manufactured by Kaufmann*. Here is another thread that discusses this:
