I have been planning some quilts with civil war repos too. I am going to use a pattern by Kim Deihl. I have seen some really nice ones done with just a regular nine patch, and I remember one done with the churn dash block

I think a "thin" quarter is the perfect description for a quarter yard cut - I'm going to try to remember that! LOL
Peckish - that quilt is just fabulous, love, love, love it!

Sorry, I wrote "Peckish" but the computer decided "pecking"!

MAXIES2 - I think it would be fine to use different colors for the centers of the d9p. I don't think of black when I think of civil war prints - brown might be a better choice if you want a unifying color. Of course if there is black in your collection then by all means try it.

Peckish - LOVELY quilt! How wide are the logs? Did you paper piece?

As long as your pattern doesn't call for any squares bigger than 9 inches you can use regular quarter yards.

Thank you all very much for the compliments. The pattern I used is from Laundry Basket Quilts, and it's called "Hawaiian Delight". I think it's still available on their website. Electric Quilt also has several pineapple blocks in their programs.
The logs are 1" wide finished. I started with an assortment of quarter yards and cut them into 1.5" x 9" strips. This made it really easy - there was not a lot of yardage to wrestle with. The blocks are paper-pieced. Some of the fabrics I used were really, REALLY ugly, but it's true what they say - if your fabric is too ugly to use in a quilt, you haven't cut it small enough yet!

There's a foundation paper for piecing 1½" strips into pineapple blocks - each sheet makes a 12" finished block. You do all your placement and sewing on the printed side of the paper, so no holding the paper up to the light to make sure you have a space covered. You pre-cut all your 1½" strips to fit onto all the spaces on the foundation. There are guidelines for where to place each strip and all you do is sew a quarter-inch from the raw edges every time you put down a new strip. It was amazingly easy and fun and so precise!

Here's one place that carries them so you can see them. Your local quilt shop probably carries them.

[QUOTE=Peckish;4827621]I made a pineapple from nothing but "skinny" quarters - civil war reproduction prints - and it turned out gorgeous.

Oh my, what a wonderful quilt!
