Some shades of purple are also considered neutrals. Use Bear's idea and get the paint chips. Simplify the project.

I wonder exactly what "naturals" means? My mind switched to earth tones, right off, but is that what everyone's does? Just in case earth tones might be what you meant, here is a picture of one I just finished that was easy and turned out very pleasant. Perhaps it will give you an idea that will help...

The pattern is a two slice layer cake from Missouri Quilt Company, only I just used five fabrics instead of a layer cake.

Hi Sue. Picking up paint chips is a GREAT idea, and so is talking to your recipients about what they think neutral is. With a cup of coffee or tea and a half an hour, you'll have their preferences nailed down.

One of my first quilts was a Snowball pattern done in shade of taupe and cream. It turned out really well and remains one of my faves. With luck your recipients will feel the same way about yours. Don't forget to post a pic when you're done!

Update: thank you all again for the thoughtful replies. I'm sincerely touched by the very helpful direction you have given me. I have found the books you recommended and they are on the way. I have studied the pictures posted and I am blown away by their beauty. I am off to Lowes today for the brilliant paint chip idea. And I do hear you when you say that it is for them(not me) and to consider what their likes are. I'm trying to stretch and grow in my quilting style. Thanks for the help and encouragement.
