I really like my particular 13 yr. old model of Bernina and knowing I can't replace it, we ALWAYS unplug my machine, computer, tv, satelite connection and main phone. Forgot the phone this summer and had it fried.

We get lots of lightning here and I always unplug my computer and the whole power strip that includes my machine. ALSO, for those who may not think of this: Don't forget to unplug the modem wire on the back your computer! We got a lightning strike 3 years ago that fried my unplugged computer because the jolt came through the phone lines.

You are doing the right thing. During Hurricane Irene I had unplugged my sewing machine and both computers.Turned out to be a good thing because when the tree came down and ripped out the power lines it also took out the ground feed wire at the electric pole. By doing this a charge of 220volts backfed into our house and fired the tv, lights,my ott light, fax machine and some other electrics.
Oh and when the tree made it past the power lines it landed on out cars and totaled both.
You ARE doing the right thing

I unplug mine too...sure wouldn't want anything to happen to my Bernina 1230.

When I finish sewing for the day, I unplug my cord from the machine. When I put my computer to bed at night I unplug my cord from the computer. Even if there is not storms in the area. Am I being overly cautious? I don't think so, I cannot afford to replace expensive machines.

I use a surge protector and even when I am finished sewing, I always unplug it. Can we even trust surge protectors? I bought a top of the line Bernina 200 in 2002 and I don't sew during storms either.

I always unplug my favorite technology items, first being my sewing machine and serger.

Better to be safe than sorry !!

My SIL, who lives next door never unplugged anything. It only took once - lightning hit real close to the house (didn't even actually hit the house) and it blew out the TV, the computer, the refrigerator...very expensive to replace! Unplugging is smart! (...so why don't I do it??)
