I recommend you get on the American Girl site. They have patterns for the dolls you can purchase. They fit wonderful! I've used them for my Granddaughter. You won't have to buy but one set as you will notice on inspection, that the dress is the same for all dolls, just variation for a particular doll. I highly recommend this, as they fit so nicely. Here are two more things I made.
I am showing the back of the rain slicker because the front doesn't have buttons yet.
The tartan is our very own Newfoundland Tartan. Personally I prefer the blue Nova Scotian one, but ours is pretty too!

BTW the rain slicker fabric came from my hoarding! When Ryan (now 27) was almost two he wanted to be Ernie ( from Sesame Street) for Halloween, so I went out and bought the pattern and the yellow canvas. Came home and showed him and he said in his cute little voice, "Mommy, Ernie not yellow, Ernie Owange!" Kept this fabric all those years and ta da! 25 years and 4 months later it was used!

I have a 9 yr. Grandaughter and a 3 Yr. old Grandaughter. I love, love, love, making clothes for there AG. & Bitty Baby. I save my lg. scraps from quiilting and by fat quarterts for these. When I don't feel like working I sew doll clothes.

i have made many of the doll clothes using commercial patterns available from simplicity, butterick and mccalls/ the ag dolls use a size 18" but for the bitty baby doll is only 15" and she is a little chubbier but many of the clothes fit both dolls.
shoes and other stuff are available on line but also at Micheals or possibly your favorite craft store.
