I was at a the PIQF Quilt Show this weekend and met a long armer that I'm considering using for a quilt top I'll have finished soon. She was telling me she only uses polyester thread because cotton breaks too easily if you use your quilt. She gave the example of a child pulling on their quilt.

I've always heard you should use cotton thread and now I'm not sure if I should send me quilt to her. I don't know if I want it to be quilted with polyester thread. What do you guys think?

if you want it quilted with cotton and she won't then I'd say she's not your quilter.

Polyester thread is stronger than cotton, that part is true. But, it's also true that polyester thread can tear out a seam over time because it is stronger than cotton fabric. For piecing, I would only use 100% cotton thread. I would however
think about using poly thread for FMQ, I can't always find cotton thread to match what I'm working on.

i have quilted with cotton (breaks alot), poly, silk, wool(also breaks alot) and rayon threads all quilted up beautifully i think my machine behaves the best with the poly threads which is probably why she uses it exclusively. i have found my machines are all very particular about what threads they are going to allow me to use. if you like her work i would think it would be just fine to have her quilt your quilt. if you check out the web sites of some of the most famous quilters out there you will find most of them use poly's and rayon threads the most. because of the color options, shine, and usability of the threads. so far (i've been quilting for others for 7+ years now) i've never had any one worry about the fiber content of the thread i use. i don't think i've even had any one ask...other than once in awhile i get a request for invisible thread.

There is nothing wrong with using poly thread. Many quilts have been done with poly. If you like the quality of her work , use the thread she has the best luck with.

The Superior Threads website has a video regarding the cotton vs poly thread questions. Each has it pros & cons, but the poly is not "bad" nor will it harm your quilts.

Also try searching this site. There was a lengthy discussion on this topic not too long ago.

True. But mine get so much use, and I wash them so much, I stick to cotton out of habit ( or fear).

I use all types of threads but the poly does run the best thru my machine. it also quilts up nicely with a great sheen to it.

We had a video presentation by Bob of Superior Threads at our quilt guild meeting. he explained that poly thread will not "cut' your fabric. Do not worry about the poly thread

I have always used poly for my quilts. They have all held up fine.
