Someone posted on another site that they soak their mat in the bathtub. For every gallon of water you use, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar and the water has to be cool. After it has soaked a while she said to scrub it with something to get the fine threads off that get imbedded in the mat.

I have one of these mat cleaners. It works and you can clean under running water. As for natural product it must be rubber thatis compressed down to make it thin.
I have also used scrubby sponges from the kitchen and a Magic sponge. If I cut batting and it sticks in old cuts, then I run my ruler over it using the side, like a car windodw scraper in the snow/ice.(For those of you who never had to do this-The skinny side of the ruler that is where the cutter lays beside as you cut) Did that make sense?
I will purchase another mat cleaner if this one ever stops working. Cheaper than a new mat
