Well here's a twist. I just discovered something different on the Walmart site, not sure how I missed it. It's another Pellon poly batting. It's listed as "high loft" but checking into it on the web, it seems high loft isn't really very high. Looking into the details, the 6 oz loft roll is 30 yards, same as the batting I ordered. Here's the kicker - this roll is only $ 57. For 30 yards x 96"!!

Since I wasn't going to get my order until Dec 23, I cancelled it while I look into this other alternative. I'll be doing lots of research to decide what to do. I can always order it again. Any opinions here?

(I have only been quilting 1 1/2 years. I have few tools and make very simple quilts. They are not heirloom quality and are not for sale. I just give them away. I've used cotton batting supplied by a charity group I quilted for and didn't really notice a difference between that and the poly I've bought. I FMQ on my DSM.)

Right now I don't see much in the way of "Clearance" items, but keep an eye on Batt-Mart.com. I have bought batting from them when I see a good deal. Also, they carry all the specialty batting like "green" batting, bamboo, wool, quilter's dream, flame retardant, black, dream puff, etc.

I checked out the link for the pellon high loft, and tried to compare against the more expensive Quilters Touch. The only thing that stood out (to me) is the more expensive pellon description referenced having a scrim binder that allows quilting up to four inches apart. Not an expert on scrim though, but maybe someone else can speak to scrim versus no scrim. Really good price though.

I'm not sure which two battings you are comparing. Can you provide links?

If it's the following two:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pellon-Qui...-Wide/38570725
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pellon-Qui...-Wide/38570727
then the difference is in the loft. The 6-oz (more expensive) will be twice as lofty as the 3-oz (less expensive).

But I'm not sure which ones you are trying to compare.

Well, here's the Pellon website with descriptions of its batting:
http://www.pellonprojects.com/produc...ester-batting/

To me, both of the Walmart listings look like the same batting (Quilter's Touch High Loft Polyester).

Edit: Oops. I take that back. My bet is that the lower cost Walmart batting is actually the Pellon siliconized polyester batting which is only 1/8" thick (about the thinnest you can get in poly). Although the Pellon website shows it in packaged form, the description says it is also available in 90" rolls (which means, of course, that the Walmart listing of 96" is wrong, but that wouldn't surprise me).

Thanks for the help. I can't find much on the less expensive batting. I found 4 reviews on Joann's, these were for the 5 oz batting which isn't at Walmart. Walmart has 3 oz, 4.5 oz and 6 oz weights. Most were disappointed that although it said "high loft", it really wan't that high. Frankly that's good news for me, I want to FMQ on my DSM and think high loft may be tricky.

http://www.joann.com/pellon-quilters.../14152698.html

Also, according to Joann's the less expensive batting has scrim.

The other thing I found was that the "high loft" on Walmart is supposedly 3 oz batting. On one of the other sites I explored I found that the more expensive batting was 2 oz. That does not seem to be a huge difference to me. It seems that they may be very similar although I'm still not sure why one is so much less money.

I think I'm going to go for it. If it's terrible I'll either try to return it to Walmart or Pellon directly.

That would not be too terrible for my use. The siliconized is what I am currently using and it's fine for what I do. Thanks!

It's interesting to me that the Pellon website says 2-3% shrinkage on their 100% siliconized polyester batting. Polyester doesn't shrink!
