I make these sort of quilts all the time, as a colour wash. When you are making the tube, make sure that you start pinning from the centre out to the edges. This stops the tube from twisting. Before you make the tube, it is also a good idea to iron each alternate strip so that the seams go in different directions. That means that you have one strip with both seams pointing inwardly and the next strip has the seams pointing outwardly. Hope these tips help you to have better success, as mine always go together quite easily with this method.

I haven't made a trip around the world quilt, and have enjoyed reading the various responses. Apparently there are several methods, all of which work. I think the general rule of thumb is, if you think you have a problem with your quilt, STOP. Don't proceed with the next step until you have solved the problem with the current step. If you keep going you will just compound the problem. Best of luck with your quilt, and keep us posted.

Even though you got more than one opinion from all of us you do see there is more than one way to go. Since you are taking a class is there a way to contact the teacher and get some feedback. I take civil war classes and our teacher is normally at the shop on Fridays for a quilting bee and so that if we have any problems we can go in and show and ask questions.

if you ironed them you also have to be careful not to stretch them. I have done several trip around the world from Eleanor burns book Quilt in a Day and they are fun, but I agree can be confusing, I do have to use post its to mark all my parts or I can get really messed up

I sew strips 1 and 2 and stop. Next I then sew 3 and 4 and stop.
Next sew those two sewn strips together to make a group of four sewn together strips and stop.
Next sew 5 and 6 together stop. Next 7 and 8, and then sew those sets together into the next group of four sewn together strips.
Keep sewing strips of fours until you have enough.
Now sew all the fours together and add any additional strips to make the count right....They should lie flat!
It is OK to Iron them....
