I was hoping to not have to mark!
Don't use masking tape. If it stays anywhere too long, it will be nearly impossible to remove it with anything less than Goo Be Gone

Eep! You must tell me all about the residue!

I also had a masking tape lesson of my own recently. Mine is a little more common sense, don't sew over the tape, but if there's a residue issue its possible I'm just not fastidious enough to notice and assuming the wash will take care of it.

I also use blue painter's tape. I have found that quality does count with this type of tape so I buy the major brand product.

Same here. I start in the middle of the quilt (longest row on a diagonal cross hatch) and sew along both sides. Then I butt another up against that one as a spacer, remove the first tape and butt it against the spacer. Once you remove the spacer, you can sew along both sides again. I save both tapes and reuse, shortening them as the length needs to be. Once I get to the corner, I replace both pieces of tape and start again from the first diagonal line to the opposite corner. That way I only use 8 sections of tape for the entire quilt. The stickiness does wear off eventually, but with pinning the tape along the length I have done an 80" x 80" quilt on my DSM with a 6 1/2" throat. Sure makes nice straight quilting lines!

Thanks everyone for the input! The tape I bought was a good brand, I am sure it would be great for making off while painting, but doesn't want to stay on fabric. I will try the pins, good idea. I was doing what EmiliasNana says she does while quilting. Just got to get it to stick! I'm not leaving it on long!

the tape you mean? Sounds like just what I need.
This tape is great! I took a 2 day embroidery class this past weekend and we used this tape. We reused it several times without any problems. Needless to say, I bought some.

I use either the blue painter's tape or the Frog tape, both available at hardware stores.

Every time I see that ad on TV, I talk to the TV - I am a quilter and I use blue painters tape. LOL

The old off white masking tape leaves a residue. I have never had the blue or the green painter's tape leave a residue but they also don't stick as well. I'm going to look for the pink stuff.
