Attic Windows Quilt
I am planning to make two Attic Window quilts for our twin grandchildren's 2nd birthday. Below I have included a link to an example of making the blocks using half-square triangles rather than having to sew the "Y seams" for each window. While this will be much quicker for me, I was wondering if any of you have used this method and/or do you think that extra seam will detract from the flow and illusion of the window frame. Thanks for your input!

Yes, I created an Attic Window quilt using this technique. I think it is an easier method than the "Y" seams. However, it is very important to accurately cut and sew the half-square triangles, otherwise, the seams will not match up and your 3-D look of windows will not be accurate. I also used black trim to outline the windows, which helped with the 3-d effect.

Just be careful of the fabrics you choose to form the window. For instance, even though you see the line with solid fabrics, the eye slides over it. However, if you were using a stripe fabric or some prints, it could take more effort to make a half square triangle that "blends" at the seam line, than to deal with the y - seam.
As in most things with quilting, both your tolerance for how a block/quilt will look and the final usage (utility as in not meant to last vs something you may be looking at for the next decade or so) can go a long way in making the choice for you.

I did something similar to what you posted but one step easier. I cut a square the width of the window sashing in the darker color and sewed it and folded it on the corner of the lighter sashing, just like sewing on a snowball corner. Then I didn't have to match any seams.

Kate Wood has a different way to do an Attic Window:
