I would go with what the mom wants, since you asked her. I would add another color to the quilt. Maybe a medium blue or a green, just to add some color. Oh,yea, also some white to lighten it up.
    Just my opinion.

I'd do what you want on the front and the black and gray on the back, that way you're covered and you know she will love it!

I think I like this idea best.

And that is just what I would tell the mom. This quilt is not for the baby's room. It is for using it on the living room floor, or for covering the baby in his carseat, or..... This quilt will be the utility or drag-around quilt (the baby's favorite {{{wink wink}}}}. I'm in the same dilemma. The mom told me that the theme of the boys' room will be nautical. Well, I already have a panel in primary colors. So I'll use it and make the same "explanation" when it is given.

BTW, I also like the idea of the gray camo fabric for one side (preferably the backing).

How about doing a reversible quilt? One side, in the colors you like. And, on the other side, the colors the mother has requested. I would consider it rude to ask what colors someone would like and then pass judgement, refuse to use them and use what I like anyway.

In my opinion you asked what she wanted and she told you so I feel you should honor her request even though it is an odd color combination but you did state you want her to use it. She may not like what your choice is just as you don't particularly like hers.

Seems like the theme here is:

If you don't think you are going to like the answer, don't ask the question.

    Or:

If you ask the question, respect/honor the answer.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas, thoughts & suggestions. I knew hearing your thoughts would help me. I do want to respect the mother's wishes, but still have the quilt "talk" to me. I think the bright construction quit with the grey camo backing would be a great compromise. Especially since dad is from a STRONG hunting family. I am also a former early learning teacher & recognise that black & white are the first colors a baby sees, so I really didn't have a problem with those colors but I would like the "new" baby to use this quilt long into his childhood....thus the yearn for a brightly colored quilt. Once again thanks for all the ideas. I will try to post a picture when I finish.
