I have noticed that Keepsake offers 44" "backing" fabrics that have been precut for their quilt kits, and you can buy them by the yard. http://www.keepsakequilting.com/prod...ic-Backing.htm
When you search for backing on that site, you get lots of fabrics that don't mention the width, as well as lots that do. I don't know if this is where you ordered from, but you're right - let the buyer beware. I would fully expect that fabric advertised as "backing" would be at least 90" wide, but apparently not.

one of my quilting advertisement books came today. nancy's notions, and I see she had real wide backing in there. can't remember whether it was 108" or 118". I soooo like my high quality off white, or white muslin I use for ALL my quilts.

Many shops carry 42" fabrics they consider good choices for backing. It is always important to read the description and know what you are getting/ordering. 'Wide backing' is often in its own category, and tells you how wide it is... Wide backs range from 54" wide up to 118" wide ** sometimes you run across a fabric that is 120" but not often. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way. A number of years ago my daughter was helping me out and came across an online shop with some great fabric at what she thought was a really great price. (Only $6.50) she kind of went a bit crazy and ordered 20 yards of fabric! When it came there was only 10 yards of fabric-- we called to find they sell their fabric by the 1/2 yard! So, when fabric was really about $7.50 a yard she paid $13 a yard... Not such a great deal.... We all learned to read the descriptions and the shop policies Before ordering anything... That was an expensive lesson.

I agree. Did it say anywhere the width of the fabric?? I bought once from a quilt shop online and was surprised it was flannel. Nothing in the description. I asked for a refund and they did issue me a credit on my Visa.
