how NOT to basket weave LOL
Sorry for the delay, had to get some placemats done!
I've attached the of what it looks like ... It was done a long time ago, and I was going to do another one, then remembered my catastrophic results and thought I would post here to see what I did wrong ... and I found out!
It's still a cute quilt ... not sure what I'd do with it tho! Lines certainly aren't perfectly straight (amazing what you learn over the years!)
It was my "own design" in that I just used a jelly roll and started weaving!

I think what you did was use two colors for both the warp and the weft (horizontal and vertical). To get the look you want, you should use just one color for the warp, and the other color for the weft. Try it with some colored paper and see if it turns out how you want it.
