Default Bernina BSR - beginning stitches breaking

When I begin stitching with the Bernina BSR I have a difficult time making the initial stitches. The upper thread consistently breaks. My technique is to hold the upper thread snuggly in my fingers as I begin taking the first stitches so that it cannot 'pool' under the fabric. I also hold the fabric firmly with both hands so that it cannot shift. I have adjusted the upper thread tension to 3.0, have new thread, proper needle, oiled bobbin case...Any ideas anybody??

What I would suggest is to pull your bobbin thread to the top. Leave a long tail with both the bobbin and needle thread that trails to the back of the machine. Then you don't have to hold snugly which should help prevent the thread from snapping.
