One thought on this...when joining the LAST of the binding to the FIRST of the binding... Begin sewing first binding about 6-8 inches from end....Stop sewing the end binding about 6-8 inches from end.

Measure the width of the binding, opened up. (That is the distance of one overlap when you lay the bindings on top of each other.) [[[[[pin this the first time to get your bearing on this, or make a mock-up on another 'quilt' to practice]]]]] Now, right angle the bindings to each other, as usual, pin, test your placement by refolding joined binding and lay on top of quilt edge. Open out, sew the two bindings together, and you have a perfect binding all the way around.

I cut my strips 2-1/2 also, most of the time. Sometimes, if I want to highlight a nice fabric in the binding, I cut it 3". I make a lot of hexagon placemats, and I cut that binding 2-1/4".

I cut 2 1/2" also.

I cut a 2 1/2" strip to give me a little more room for turning. If it is a fancy quilt I do as above, stitch raw side to front of quilt and hand miter and finish in the back by hand. If it is a child's quilt or wall hanging sometimes I stitch raw side to BACK and then fold it over to the front and use a fancy machine stitch to finish it by machine. It looks cute and is super durable for children's quilts especially that get washed often.

I'm having a senior moment right now and can't remember the name of the company, but there is a good video of applying a binding on -- and this is where I can't remember the whole name -- it's Missouri something. Sorry. I'm sure in a few minutes it will come to me.

I didn't know it was called French binding. I've done it both ways, 2 1/4 and 2 1/2, and I prefer 2 1/4.
