A quilt store near my parents went out of business and I bought 12 yards of moda black. The thickness of the fabric was AWESOME. The newer moda black feels thinner, but I still like it. I am very picky about what I use my old stash on because I love the quality and feel of the black.

Michael Miller makes a very rich black.

The piece I bought shrank over two inches in width when I washed it.

(Yes, I did soak it in hot water)

Kona goes for 3.98 a yard at Hancocks of Paducah. Their Moda Bella is 4.98 a yard.

Kona cotton is good, and also RJR's Cotton Supreme. It has a slight sheen on one side of the fabric; the reverse is matte. It's nice and dark and... well, RJR's line of solids just doesn't get a lot of advertising, I guess. Our sales rep tells us that RJR is the black that Keepsake Quilting sells, so I guess they like it too!

Well, technically, RJR may be A black that Keepsake Quilting sells, but the only black solid on the store shelf is Kona Cotton. They sell solids from the RJR, Kona Cotton and Moda Bella lines. I've used all three and they're all good.

Try Fabric Depot, they sell Kona black in 6 yd or 10 yd cuts, the six yard is $24.00,the 10 yard is $36.00, they carry 5 colors in the six yard piece or carry lots more by the yard!

Michael Miller also makes a wonderful black. My LQS has both Kona and Michael Miller.

I've never been to their store, only their website, and I have seen their catalog.

I think that the sales reps give out just enough info to "talk up" the lines that they themselves are selling. Personally I don't appreciate it when they disparage their competition's products. !!
