Wow! Now that is a wonderful hubby!!

Sometimes reds can continue to bleed. They are notorious for it. I find that when I'm prewashing my fabrics, I throw a small (6-inch) square of muslin in with the wash. If any dyes come out it will stain the muslin & I rewash. If the muslin square is clean, I dry it & toss the muslin in the dryer with the fabric. Sometimes the heat from the dryer will cause the fabrics to bleed off (blues are notorious for this) and if it does it will show up on the muslin square. If it continues & things like the dye catchers or the Synth (can never spell it  ) doesn't help, throw the fabric out or use it for rags or something else.

Hopefully the Synth stuff will do the trick!

I am sorry to hear of your problem but glad that you posted a thread about it. My sister-in-law has an Amish quilt that she never has washed. The cat was sick on it and when she tried to treat it, the stain came out but the magenta fabric in the flowers ran. This is an appliqued quilt with a snowy white background.
I'm hoping one of these suggestions works for her. Not sure which to try first.
    thanks again,

Well, I'm on my third wash with the synthrapol, and so far no luck. If anything, the whites are even pinker. I'm a little bummed, because it feels like I've ruined my tree skirt :( Learned my lesson, though, and will be more careful with reds in the future.

At this point you've got nothing to lose trying a wash with Synthrapol and a bleach safe for color-fast fabrics. It's the last thing I can think of to do.

Nope, no luck with that either. Ah well. It's not too awful looking, and the light parts are the closest part to the tree, so probably not very noticeable.

Could you make a paste with Clorox II and Laundry soap, let it sit over night and see what happens?

    I'm so sorry for you.

For fabrics that you think it is going to bleed, you have to pre-wash with yellow vinegar (the chepaest one) and when it stops bleeding wash it like you normal do. The washing with the yellow vinegar I do that by hand.

A friend of my has made a Nearly Insane in White and...Red. She worked on it for almost 5 months. After finishing the top she washed it. Well she was crying on the phone, all the white parts were pink or red!
She washed her top with steradent! It worked for her top but be carefull because in steradent is a little amount of clorox.
