Collecting Thimbles?

I've been collecting thimbles for 30 years. I have a seal skin thimble, an antique gold childs thimble, a commemorative Safeways thimble, Disney thimbles, a ceramic thimble I made myself, all my great grandmothers thimbles that she used in her day (and some are quite worn down), and several of the old Manopoly game piece thimbles just to name a few.

i love thimbles, and my "prizes" are some from the UK that were found in medieval and roman sites. there is one that is so tiny that it had to have been a child's. they are made of bronze, and are bent, dented, worn, and patina covered--and i love them. i can feel the history in them when i hold them.
i have my grandmother's old sterling thimble, too--it is plain, but elegant, with a little engraving around the edge. she was an elegant, yet understated victorian lady.
they are lovely reminders of the heritage we have. someday, we may be lucky enough to be remembered by someone who finds one of ours!

Wow!! Mermaid, you have quite the collection going! Looking at your pics I see I have some that you have, like the Coca Cola needle case. One thimble I bet none of you have is a crocheted one my mom made for me years ago :) It has little yellow beads crocheted into it.

Wow! Sandyms, I'd love to see that crocheted thimble--I DO NOT have one of those in my collection. However, I have the keepers-crocheted. Three use a "pulley bone" from a chicken or turkey for the base to hang the holder from. The other (small ivory color-uses a wire.) I love the uniqueness of them.

To Display my thimbles I found an old printers drawer at a flea market. It is divided into small sections. They used to sort their type into this. I just hung it on the wall and filled it up. I got to look for another one, mine is full.

I have a sister who collects thimbles. Old, new doesn't matter. Her son is in the army and has tried to get one from all over the world. They are wonderful to look at. She finally got a display case for them. There are alot she has gotten from estate sales yard sales ect. too.

He does use a metal detector. He's pretty good at it - you can google him (Robert Bohrn) and you'll get some information on one of his more interesting finds! :)
