I sometimes wish I could come help people pick fabrics. I see so many quilts where the colors just miss or there's not enough contrast or too much contrast.

I also like clarity of colors - working with greyed colors is not something I do easily.

Getting the opinion of the person for whom you are making the quilt (if it is not a surprise) can be helpful. My DD picked out some colors that I cringed at, but they work well together in her quilt. I couldn't believe it. Her color sense is different from mine. The colors are striking together - they 'play' together well.

As for taking an hour, hey! That is great! I have one project for which I started gathering fabrics 8 years ago. A little here, a little there, and eventually I will have what I need for two crazy quilts. I figure, when my parenting responsibilities are finished, I will have time to do it!

My LQS is small but the owner has a good eye for color. She will ask me what i"m going to make and ask about colors I like. In just a few minutes she has a stack and helps me pare it down to what I need. I have not been unhappy with the final choices. I also have a friend who does are work. She often helps me decide what to use.

I'm new to quilting but I have noticed that when I pick a couple colors and then I add white to it...it really makes the colors pop.

I am also one that has trouble picking colors. That is why all of mine are rather neutral. I am afraid to put all that work into bold colors that I will hate by the time it is finished. I feel safe with matching neutral colors.

"Color Works: The Crafter's Guide to Color" by Deb Menz is my bible, it has pages devoted to color values and interactive color wheels - uses punch-outs to help.

right now it's on sale - check it out.

I also have this problem so I am glad they have come out with the jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs, etc that all coordinate. Makes it much easier for me.
