I have a lot of scraps of white or very light fabrics that I use to cut the small backing squares. You can also use "ugly" fabrics that you wouldn't use for anything else. If they have dark prints just don't use them under white or very light colored fabrics. Old soft sheets work well too and make a ton of small blocks.

qzuslivz I have use week old new paper, parment paper, old sheets work well. I have roll of brown paper towels that are not cut that I have been work with for the small stuff with. I have read on here someone use coffee fillters, adding machine paper Qzuslivz you can use just about anything you like becuse you can take off or if you use fabric it will stay. Just have fun.

Here are the blocks I did for my Alzheimers tribute quilt for my FIL. It was the first time I tried a crumb type of quilt and it was very challenging but fun. The only thing is that my crumbs seemed to multiply and I have just as much as I did before I started.

Look for the thread I started a looong time ago "Guy lets show the ladies out quilts" or something like that. There are some really nice quilts that us hairy leggers made :D
But getting back on the subject I do not think that there is any certain size for a crumb. For me it was trying to get rid of spare blocks and little scraps that I could not toss out.
