Hi Dixie
So glad you are well enough to pick your quilting back up. I just made a simple floor quilt out of 10" squares for my newest grandson, Luke" to learn to crawl on. It would have made a great D9p but I was in a rush to get it done. (They grow fast at this stage!) It looks fantastic and was really quick and easy to put together.

I made one with large squares a few years ago, but can't remember how big those squares were. One way to make them look cute is with the Next Generation Disappearing 9-Patch. Make your 9-Patch as usual and cut it in quarters. Now take each quarter and layer it RST with a same size square of a solid or a tonal that reads solid. Sew across on the diagonal on both sides of the center line. Cut on center line. Be sure the sewing is always the same way on all pieces, and do not sew through the old center square. Then you arrange all these pieces as you wish.
I used black for the original center square and the result was stunning.

You just gave my an idea for a quilt for my sister. I have a layer cake of greys (she loves that color) and she doesn't like anything too busy either.
Thanks!
PS. I made a D9P and it is a bit on the busy side (used 5 inch squares)
