I am enjoying your posts on the progress of the red bargello. The bargello is one quilt I have yet to piece and want to do one soon in scarlet, white, black & grey. Go Bucks!

What if you added 2 narrow black borders with a narrow red border or flange between? It would frame it up nicely and you could do with narrow borders and not add too much to the size. Binding - I think I'd have to lay out some fabric and see whether black or red would look best.
I agree completely that this is the way to finish off this quilt. I, too, wonder what your plans are for backing. You have done an amazing job.
