I like to make quilted purses. I make them in 3 different sizes. I went to Lowe's, bought a piece of plexiglass, and they cut it for me so that I could get as many of the 3 sizes as possible out of one sheet of plexiglass. I make a "pillow case" for the bottom of the purse, slide in the plexiglass and it works wonders to reinforce the bottom of the purse, and help keep a nice shape. I get about 15 pieces for the price they charge for one baggy bottom in the catalogs.

I had a teacher who printed the templates for the Storm At Sea on clear plastic like the stuff you put on rulers to keep them from sliding. She gave us the sheets and sent us off to Home Depot (or Lowe's) to but the plexiglass and then you just peeled off the back and stuck it to the plexiglass and cut it to the size. Don't know if this would work for you but at least all the markings end up on the inside between the film and the plexiglass so they never rub off.

Also, You could probably mark your templates with a really fine brush and fingernail polish. I can never get that stuff off anything when I need to. Had an antique quilt to repair and granddaughter had spilled polish on it years ago. Boy was that a task getting most of that off. It might be worth a try though. The marker ink does rub off over time but you might also try marking it and putting a piece of clear tape or the clear vinyl stuff they sell to keep your ruler from sliding on the fabric over the markings.

i just recently saw this fun and done quilt demo it sounds like something i would like. just wondering.. i know there are 2 square to each size so if you cut 18.5 for a 16 in square ..a 10.5 for 10 in. and 8.5 for 8 in....i don't see the math. or did you mean 16.5 for the 16 in. square ? also what is the other size square ?
i go to a glass cutting place to get mine done because i have had triangles and diamonds and hexagons cut but for squares i will surely go to lowe's. thanks dotti

I'm also a nurse and we use a clear plastic ruler(slightly thicker than plastic wrap for food) to measure wounds. I cut off the ruler part and used clear packing tape and taped it to my sewing machine to measure my buttons for an acuurate measure of my button holes. It works great. Why not use this on the under side of your plexi-glass. You might find something simular in an office supply store or medical supply store.

    Dotski,
The difference between the block and the backing is 2 inches, you place the batting/block 1inch inside the batting all the way around. SO, a 16 inch FINISHED block would need a 16.5 inch template for the batting and 18.5 inch template for the backing. Clear as mud????

I couldn't make it into town so I ordered the acrylic glass on line and my husband made me a bunch of rulers. I just drew them on the paper back from the card board ones in in some of the quilt books I have. Now I have all of them to make the Dresden plate and things like that. I love them. Need holes in some of them but the rest are hanging.

I now have the perfect small ruler for longarm stitching for $1.50! I had ALMOST bought this same size ruler on a website for $16.50 with $4.50 in shipping.

If anyone gets the Keepsake Quilting catalog you will find a wooden mallet for "whacking" down seam allowances. When you have adjoining seams they tend to be thick and if you "whack" them they will flatten out more. WELL, you can pay the price in the catalog for this wonder item OR go to Wal-Mart and head over to the kitchen area and get yourself a MEAT TENDERIZER that has a smooth surface on one side. I got my "Seam Whacker" for $3.50!

It pays to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, so to speak!
I've been using a rubber mallet. It's so old that I don't rmember what I paid for it. I would have never thought of a meat tenderizer.

This still gave me big leftovers, they said I could bring it back and they would cut again for free (with receipt). What a great deal!

Purplemem, I have the fun and done template I purchased from Bayside quilting(havent used it YET). It comes in two pieces....Did you have them cut you two piece templates for each of those sizes? In other words the inner and outer pieces?
