I’m taking a class on November 17, 2017, called “Dash Quilts.” The list of fabrics and how to cut them is okay, but it looks like we will be doing a lot of cutting in class after we’ve done some sewing. The instructor has a book and ruler for sale at the class. The class cost about as much as the book and ruler. I don’t really want another book or ruler, so has anyone taken the class or know about this? We were Not given the size(s) of ruler we need. Really, really, really don’t want another ruler. Any ideas or help is appreciated. I did check the internet to see what I could find out, but there wasn’t much. Or maybe I didn’t cue in the right words.

Not heard of that class, but you might either "google" the instructor's name or contact the sponsoring organization (guild or LQS). Sometimes instructors will make available rulers for use at the class so you can try it out. Did you see a picture of the quilt(s)? Maybe you could just take some of your rulers that look like they'd be helpful with the finished quilt. Although it seems when the quilt uses some unique ruler, it's just as easy to purchase the ruler.

Using Google, the only thing I came up with other than 'Churn Dash' was this site http://www.heatherjonesstudio.com/sh...-pdf-pattern-1 The picture looks like a lot of HST's and plays with colour values. Could you tell us the name of the book or instructor? That might help.

Well, tried a couple of different word combinations. If you are taking the class from Cinnamon's in Jacksonville, you might want to check with them because the site said it was cancelled. It was the only reference to a 'dash' class and did mention their template.

My problem is that I blithely signed up for the class without asking about special rulers, etc. My bad, as one of my students used to say. There will be a discount on the book and ruler. Sigh. The instructor is Shloe Kerness and her website is dashquilting.com. It would be nice if she had a ruler or two to try out, but I’m thinking I just need to get on with planning to buy. Ugh! Her book or instructions are titled, “In a Dash.”

If it's a square with in a square pattern that's on her website I think you could get away with any square ruler that's bigger than the finish square. It looks like a ruler just marks where the perfect middle of the square within a square is. You could easily Mark that would type on your own ruler. After examining her webpage and facebook page, I would suggest that this lady has found a great way to market herself. Her blocks look to be a simple square within a square and should take no special rulers. Instructions start with a layer cake, so I'm guessing that the center block is a 5" square surrounded by 2 1/2" strips. Then she adds variations from that. But I have not taken her class and am making a judgement based on what I see in her promotions. Good luck and have fun! .... and you can always do your own thing within her limits.

I'm with luvspaper. If it is the block on her website, it can easily be done using a 12" square ruler and some coloured marking tape. I hate 'specialty' rulers too!

It looks like the ruler is used to square up the block while keeping the center in the right spot. The premise of the class is to have a quilt top finished in class. The ruler would be the quickest and easiest for squaring up your block. You could do it if you had the correct square already and just mark off the center square with 1/4 inch masking tape.
