I have Warm and Natural batting duck taped to a piece of insulation board. It makes it portable. I just lean it against my closet and slide it behind the door to the room if I want it out of the way.. We bought a 4 x 8 foot piece, and I cut the top two feet off. Wish I hadn't done that, but it still works for me. (taller would have come in handy many times.)

I'll take a picture, in case it might work for you. I am really happy with my design wall.

I put felt on my design wall and found fabric does not stick well to it. When I recover it I will use flannel.

I made a small design "wall"on the back of a shelving unit. It's 36" wide and 60" long and made of headliner fabric. I really like it!

This is exactly what I am using.... very inexpensive and can easily be put away if needed.

Whatever you use you wouldn't want it to stretch out of shape with the weight of the patches or blocks.

I think a piece of insulating material covered in batting or flannel would be best. Then I'd add ribbons marking the area into 12 inch squares and also for marking diagonal lines for placement of blocks.

I have used a flannel tablecloth in the past and hung it on the wall. However, I find it easier and the blocks less of a tendency to fall off the design wall once I started using a large insulator panel covered with flannel. I can lean it against the wall at a slight angle and the blocks stay on better. Lightweight and easy to move if needed. Like Prism99 described.

Jan, I also love your explainations, they add so much to the reply. What occupation are/were you in? Has to be the fabric world somehow! LOL!!

I use an old flannel sheet - thumb tacks - used it for years no problems. large, cheap, and works like a charm.

I re covered my wall with microfiber cloth. It has static cling. A heavy paper pieced block will stay put.

I tried batting and didn't like it. All 4 of my design walls are made with 1" insulation covered with flannel.
