Do you always know who your project is for, or where it will go, before you start?

My first quilt was specifically started and will finish (at some point) for a specific person. The second one I started for a specific person will not go to her any longer. I am working on a different one for her.
So I guess my answer is yes and no.

both.... If I'm planning a quilt project to be a gift for a particular person's special event, I do choose the fabrics just for the recipient. If I just want to try a new pattern, I have fun with my stash and maybe one new fabric I'm itching to use. I almost always create my borders when it's time to make them and I can see the pattern all done; I usually do something new I've wanted to try on a border.
I like both; quilting for a purpose and quilting for a surprise.

I do both too! Sometimes I start something and half way through think ' oh, so and so would like this'. I made a quilt for my Mum's bed and she chose the fabrics - never again! In future, I decide on the fabrics. I hated what she chose and really didn't enjoy working on the quilt. No when I go there and see it on her bed, I think 'yeuch'! So in future, I'll let people pick vague colour schemes but I'll pick the fabric! Is that mean? Naaah - they should just be grateful for what they get, right?

I usually always have someone in mind when I start a quilt. I'm trying right now to make sure all my grandsons have at least 1 special memory quilt made by their Grandma Tidwell. So far I've gotten the 7 year old one made and he's had it awhile, I am now working on the 6 year old one, and I have part of the 10 year old one's pictures all lined out. I just haven't decided how I'm going to put it together yet. I also have 1 of the daughter-in-laws quilt almost ready to quilt, which is hard at this point as I don't know if she is going to stay in the family or not. I've discussed it with my son and have decided she will still get it because the whole time I've worked on it it's been for her and her alone and I promised her a quilt a long time ago. I still love her even if I don't like the way she's been acting.
Other quilts I do just to see if I can. Most of the time they just take on a life of their own.

There are only 2 places for quilts or projects to go....me or someone else lol. If I am not making it with someone else in mind...it is always for me. My husband is always asking me "Who is that one for?" I always have problems letting go of the quilts that I don't have someone specific in mind when the quilts are started. If I know that I am making it so give someone, I don't have any problems letting go. So far I have keep about half of what I have made. We keep plenty warm in the winter.

Yes and no. If it is for family or friend, it is all planned out. I find a pattern and fab to suit the person. When I started the BOM at LQS I didn't know who to give it to, but before the 12 months were up, I decided it had to son's name on it. RWB stars--very fitting for a July birthday. I do a lot of charity quilts so that is where I test patterns.

Yikes !! This thread has forced me to stop and think about what I actually do. I would think that most of the time I see a fabric that I really like. Then I buy it and other pieces that would go with it. As far as amounts, I never have a clue as to how much to buy. Then I bring whatever I have purchased and put it in the stash. Then when I have a need (either need a gift, or need to just quilt, or need to try out a pattern) I go into my stash and see what fabrics I'd like to put together for the pattern. Unfortunately sometimes I have to go back to the store to find something else to add to what I have at home. I know this sounds very bad, but in my twisted mind, it makes sense.
