I get into my mind what I want it to look like and where I'll use it. Then I get excited about showing off my finished quilt to friends. I get so excited, I can't wait to get started.

Just tell yourself, "Self, if you don't cut it...you can't sew it!" So, start cutting!!!

But, let me tell you about me now. I am brand new to quilting. I've been at it, for oh, 3 days now. I don't think I've made a perfect cut yet!!! lol Oh, so sad. I have a mat, a ruler, a rotary cutter...and yet, when I fold my fabric like I've seen done on YouTube...yes, YouTube for my Quilting Classes hahaha...something always goes wrong and doesn't work out for me. But, I'm moving on to Day 4 now...big cutting dreams!!

My mom, who taught me *almost* everything I know about sewing, doesn't worry about perfect cuts. When stuff absolutely must match, she makes a cardboard template for finished size of shape, butts it up against the last seam she sewed, draws a pencil line for the new seam, and sews there.

Does it take longer to sew pieces together that way? You betcha. But it takes less time to cut the fabric, and less time ripping out imperfect seam allowances. Works very well for simple shapes (squares, triangles, hexagons).

Great advice! Welcome to the quilting world. And you have a great attitude about it all. You'll do well! It's true you get better with practice - cutting, qtr inch seams, fmq (if you choose to do this). I feel I see some improvement with each project. And super advice on this quilting board!!

Me too!!! I waste more time deciding, than it takes to do the project.
