I do a separate binding all on machine. Using the flange binding is great, gives you a nice line to follow when sewing down on front and looks great. Have carpal tunnel in right wrist, so hand sewing does not agree with me.

I have made a few by bringing the backing to the front and hand sewing it down. For me it takes longer than a separate binding. There is no right or wrong answer, just personal preference. Do however you want.

I've only used the backing wrap around binding when told to for charity quilts.

For my own quilts I do regular binding to be able to enhance the finished look.

Like many things in quilting, it is your choice.

No hand sewing for me. I also cheat and buy the binding. I'm a newbie and the less I have to cut and figure out the better. LOL I do have a quilt that I'm working on and I'm thinking about self=binding just to try it. The material is some I bought from Jo....s and it is not good quality. I bought it when I first started quilting and just getting around to using it.

I've always used separate binding, but might consider the fold over technique in the future.

I also take pride in my workmanship and often bring the backing forward for binding. I've never done it with the front--never thought of it (might give it a try)! Sometimes I use a seperate binding--I don't think one way is really easier or harder (or better or worse)--it depends upon the individual quilt and quilter.

I like the separate binding. I don't have a problem with bindings. I either hand sew (no problems with hands, or carpal tunnel) or machine stitch from the front. The times I've tried using the backing folded over didn't come out so great. I don't use Sharon Shamber's glue method, don't find it necessary. Like other posters have said, its a preference and an individual decision on which way to go.

self binding, bringing the backing around to the front, is something I have done twice maybe. not bad, just usually make binding and add to the front and then fold over to the back. I've even added binding to the back and folded to the front on a few.
