Does this gift quilt need much of a border or just bind it and be done?

I agree with dunster. If it is the right size you want, leave it off. It is also easier not to have to quilt a border depending on you FMQ skills and when you need to have this quilt finished (such as a deadline).

Not long ago I saw a tut showing how a very thin border was added to a wider border then adding both as one border so the thin one looked like piping. I would do that with a light green piping then use the same dark green at the same width to break up the line of the dark green border blocks from the quilt border.
