I prefer the first arrangement as the other one looks more staid and 'blocky'.

I like the first one...it appeals to my eyes more but both are nice.

I like the first one because in the second one my eyes "go all over the place." The darker squares seem to keep my eyes focused on the chain.

I like them both. I agree with Wildyard. If it is for a female #1 has a softer look and if it is for a male #2 has the true Irish Chain look. Whatever you pick, it will be beautiful!

The first one looks softer and more "blendy". The second one is harder and crisper. Depends what kind of look you are going for. I think I like the first one best...
