I've finally plucked up the courage to get out my Double Wedding Ring templates. Whilst foraging through all my fabric and looking at colour combinations online, I came across the Rings That Bind quilt as you go method on YouTube, and also the Egg Money method.

I've had my acrylic templates for years and wondered if the Arc is the same curvature as the Rings that bind arc. I can see there are extra lines on the RTB, which, I suppose could be transferred to my own... I think.

Would my traditional arc be ok to use, or will I need to purchase the newer template to sew the quilt in this method. I'm wanting to embroider Some of the top middles and thought this method would be simpler to pick up, carry around and finish in one block.

My guess is that they very well could be different, because if you notice, some DWRings are perfectly round while others look like squares with rounded corners. I would take a close look at the photos of the finished quilts for each. Unless someone on here already knows and can tell you, you probably can't know for sure unless you can do a direct comparison of the different templates.

Hi Joanne, I bought the Rings That Bind not long ago,through Amazon, and the template was broken on arrival. I don't have any other acrylic templates to measure by, but if you were to draw a suitably large-sized circle, and another circle 2 ins inside that, divide into four sections, & see how your templates measure up. If they don't you could use your drawn ones. I have managed to repair mine with nail gel, but it may not be permanent. I too am planning on doing this method, maybe after xmas.

i am doing the Rings that Bind quilt for my daughter. the circle before you fold over after sewing is approx 18" diameter with the finished "square" after joining and folding being around 12". Depending on how you sew they could vary. I haven't had a problem with sizing as long as the finished circles are very close to the same size. When I started it I was trying to do hand quilting in the centers but didn't like it. That was before I bought my embroidery machine. It is very easy to do and I am using my embroidery machine to do designs in the center before I sew together and fold over to complete the design. The embroidery designs are all white so they look good on both sides. The fabric I am using is a collection starting from the 70's that I have used for many projects including clothing for the kids when they were little. And yes, it has taken me 8 yrs and it still isn't finished. Alot of life has gotten in the way. plus I don't quilt every day. Sometimes not even every week. Too busy. She is asking about it so I guess I had better get it done. I plan on retiring next year so then I will have time to finish. I have 2 more behind it to complete too. One Courthouse steps for older daughters wedding using her wedding dress from 2 years ago and one for granddaughter who is only 2 but will need for her bed next year when she graduates to a big bed from her "car" bed.

Back to original question...I started a DWRing using the original single piece method. The pieces when connected were alot larger than the Rings that Bind works out to. The pattern I used was a single template for the peices then joined together to make the arches, circles and footballs etc. I got about 1/3 of the quilt done and decided I didn't want to complete it because I didn't want to do whole quilt quilting. I do the QAYG methods. Alot easier. I usually figure out how to divide the quilts into rows to quilt then add the next pieces and quilt etc. The arch that the Rings that Bind uses is smaller that what I have seen for the other versions of DWRing quilts.

Thank you so much for you're replies, JustABitCrazy, having no real comparison, I had to just peruse the net and guess. Gay, Your suggestion was a brilliant idea and I've spent the last few hours faffing with paper, pencils and rulers to try and get an approximate size. It seems to be right, but I'll be cutting out and trying later this afternoon and will let you know. I hope your template stays together.
craftygater, I have a similar quilt that is taking me years. It's all hand stitched flying geese with panels inbetween... I think this flock of birds is mocking me and flying off... I don't seem to be coming to an end. Your DWR sound wonderful. Quilting as I go is the reason I want to do the Rings that bind method. I need more practice free motion quilting as I haven't quite got the neat nack, yet. So if I make a mess, it isn't in the middle of a kingsize quilt.

Oh dear, Ladies, I'm afraid I'm going to have to put this project on hold for a little while, because I've been a very naughty quilter. Whilst emptying my cubby-hole/closet to Narnia... boxes to pick my fabrics, I came across a bag of log cabin blocks that need stitching together and two finished quilt tops that had found their way into there... One of them is for a Quilt Of Valour! and should have been wrapped around a recovering Hero months ago.
Along with my flying geese and mermaid appliqué I've got on the go, I've got to finish some of these before starting anything new. The QOV and a pillowcase is at the top of the pile and I'll be off to get all the batting i need first thing Monday morning.
I really do want to start this DWR and have ordered Egg Money Quilts Book to compare methods for when I finally get to pick my fabrics. Hopefully it won't be too long.
