    I don't think you put it on the back, you put it on the front (like you do when embroidering towels or fleece so the embroidery doesn't disappear into the fabric). I use water soluble for this, but the way I understand it, this stays in place so if you have a light color thread on a dark colored object or on top of dark thread area, the dark color doesn't ghost through the light thread making the color look off. But, I may be misunderstanding what the article said. :shock:
