This hasn't happened to me either BUT I've found, when filling a bobbin, I have to watch it or the thread will slip & wind around the pole thingy that the bobbin sits on. That's not fun, can't imagine a bigger mess..

Judy, Just curious. Is it serger cone thread that you are using in your machine? Are you using it to machine quilt? I sometimes load bobbins for utility sewing with serger cone thread but I don't sew with it in my regular sewing machine.

I bought one of those fancy many thread holding units to sit behind my embroidery machine. It will hold about 20 spools of thread or cones. That thing is now in the closet all nicely put away for some other "sucker" to use. I had that same thing happen to me with my Designer Diamond. There was about a half of a large spool of thread wrapped around the shaft. Luckily I got it all out without anything breaking. But never again will I put a cone holder back behind the machine.

Hmm! Thanks for the tip. Going to do that now. have lot of projects going for the holidays and don't need to be sidetracked with any more delays.
Years ago someone at Houston taught me to tape a safety pin, with the little round circle end pointed up, to the top/back of the machine between the hand wheel and the thread uptake lever. Thread the cone thread thru the little circle and continue on with the usual thread path.
This has always helped me avoid the problem you describe.

Yeah, I've done that, too. I was using a spool of clear filament thread that I had next to the machine and because I didn't have a spool holder for the table I was using a safety pin taped to the machine to use as a thread guide. And the thread got wound around the hand wheel a diehard to haveit taken apart and repaired. Like you say - lesson learned!

I have had the above happen before also. Never keep extra spools around the machine. Not that I knew this could happen, just keep extras away.
