Thanks Jan, you're so great with sharing tips!! This has happened to me several times on my Viking...fortunately my dealer just pulled the big wheel?? off and removed the thread easily.

I work in a quilt store that sells and repairs sewing and embroidery machines. Getting thread wrapped around the hand wheel is not a dumb dumb dumb thing but something that happens frequently. Don't beat yourself up about it. It has happened to a whole lot of people. It is just one of those things that can happen, and sometime does.

Thank you for the giggle this morning. It feels good to know that we all have our moments. <3 I have had my thread some how go under my spool and wrap around, "lock" the machine up. The first time it happened I was beside myself, thankfully it was the weekend and I HAD to figure out the problem. Saved me a trip into the shop.

Been there the thread left from filling a bobbin had sneaked down and wrapped around the wheel. what a mess, now I know how to take the wheel loose if this happens again, but I'm very careful that there's no dangling thread from the bobbin filling spool.

You know how it's said that when you're embroidering and you can do something else because the machine does all the work? Everytime I do that it will mess up or something and it takes more time to fix. I never walk away any more when embroidering,

Me either! Scared the pants off me when it made horrible noises. I was just sitting at the other machine--thought I would be smart and get two things done at once--when the fabric outside the hoop somehow looped over into the embroidery area. The machine did not like it. Now I sit right there and read!

This happened to me because I left a spool of serger thread setting near the wheel. My repair friend got it out for me. I am now very careful to never leave any thread that I am not using near the machine.

Wow thanks for posting this. I have my cone stand tucked right behind the machine - my machine is set-in to my table and there is enough room back there to fit the stand just nicely, out of the way and won't tip over.
But not so nicely when so close to the wheel!
    Whew!
